Pamela Anderson Heads to Torino With a Lifetime Achievement Award

Pamela Anderson is one of four honorees set for the 44th Torino Film Festival, running Nov. 24 to Dec. 2 in the Piedmontese capital. According to Variety, she joins John Travolta, Isabelle Huppert and Josh Safdie among the recipients of career achievement awards, each shaped like the Stella della Mole, the 12-point sculpture atop Turin’s Museo Nazionale del Cinema.

Yahoo! reports that the honorees will meet local audiences for Q&As at two cinemas just 500 meters apart in the city center, and that the lifetime achievement trophies will be accepted at the historic Teatro Regio on opening night. Artistic director Giulio Base describes Anderson’s career as a mix that still works, praising her for reinventing herself and surprising people who thought they already knew her.

Long Before the Festival Lineup, There Was a Showgirl

The lifetime achievement honor is a reminder of how much work sits behind a public image, and that is exactly the territory explored in the episode on The Last Showgirl, where Just Blane and Coco dig into Pamela Anderson’s performance as Shelley, a 57-year-old Las Vegas showgirl facing the closing of the show that has defined her life for three decades.

Blane and Coco treat the film as more than a showbiz story. They look at the archetypes of maiden, mother and crone, and at how society tends to tolerate women who have aged out of their visible roles. Coco brings her personal and feminist lens to the question of what a woman is worth when the spotlight moves on, while Blane brings his industry perspective on how Hollywood and the entertainment business have historically handled women past their prime. Together they follow the thread from Shelley’s estrangement from her daughter to the hard choice between art and family that the film refuses to soften.

What makes the conversation land is that it never reduces Anderson to a single chapter of her career. The hosts treat her performance as a turning point in how the public reads her, and they push listeners to think about their own choices when the thing they built their life around comes to an end.

If you have been thinking about Pamela Anderson’s work beyond the headlines, this is a good place to start. Listen to the full conversation on Parallel Frequencies, and find more from Ride The Wave Media on the show page.
