We Turned 80 Pallets Into This Bar & It Nearly Killed Us

June 16, 2026

In This Episode

We showed up to a bar, drank tequila straight, and accidentally became life coaches for the owners.

WHAT WENT DOWN: - Fallon and Shalene opened Melancholy in a 150-year-old building they gutted themselves—literally broke down 80 Italian pallets by hand and stained them all because YouTube made it look easy - The glamour mirror broke and they're obsessed with it; also the headboard came from the Yellowstone set and they're still trying to get the production company to just give them more - Aubrey's been keeping a bonsai alive for seven months and her prayer plant is having a whole identity crisis (won't fold up at night anymore, which apparently plants do when they're sad) - Women-owned bar owners in Salt Lake are basically a secret society—there were like three of them at the last coalition meeting surrounded by 50 dudes - Every single thing in this place has a story and a person attached to it; the bar top came off Facebook Marketplace, the post office boxes are from somewhere cool, and the plants are all real except the ones that aren't

Come get a spicy paloma at Melancholy and tell Fallon and Shalene the podcast sent you—they're about to launch their website and deserve all the local love.

Welcome to Tipsy Tats and Tacos. Parental discretion is advised. Listen to your fucking mom too. Welcome everybody. Today we are at a local bar to a dear friend of mine.

It's called Melancholy. And we have the owners here with us. We're going to interview them. We're going to have lots of questions. We have Fallon and Shalene.

It's pronounced like Celine Dion. We went over this. It's Celine Dion. It's a long-going issue. Actually, mine too.

It's Fallon like Jimmy Fallon. Oh. You guys are actually celebrities. You guys are famous. That's awesome.

I love it. Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Salon. I feel like it's just very easy. Fallon. No.

Oh Fallon is mostly what I get. You're like there's not two L's. We're Fallon. It's my favorite one. Fallon?

Yeah. My friend's name is Fallon. I feel like you should speak into that one a little bit. My name's Fallon. Guess why I have that name?

I am one. Right? Right? You're like I will murder. I do murder often.

That probably would show. That's a different podcast, guys. I have something I've liked more often. If you want to do that, we can podcast about it. We'll have like the investigative crime.

You guys will do the murder. We'll be like, no, they're our friends. They don't do any murders. Yes, that's what Gator is talking about. At all.

I'm supposed to start the conversation off with murders. Yeah. Those are my favorite podcasts. Right? It's like the I know someone.

We want to make our podcast show up in every genre. So we talked about murder. So now we'll show them the murder mystery. Yay! Yeah.

They'll be surprised. They'll be like, I don't know that. They're like, okay, so let's not go to Mellon College because they like to murder. All good. It makes them interesting, right?

Right? And you guys have a couple name? Name? I mean, a business partnership name. Couple name.

Couple name. Shalyn. Shalyn. I'm mad at that. Shalyn.

It actually took like five seconds. Two and a half years almost to come up with it. It just was barely a couple weeks ago. I feel like that was being a successful one. We could have done with Felene.

Here we go. Felene. That's not a bad one either. Felene. Felene.

Oh yeah. That's a good one. Uh oh. We could go either way here. We'll have to go.

That's so... Okay, let's talk about what everybody's drinking while we're here. How about that? Oh, should I go first? Go ahead.

I have to remember what my... I'm drinking the Reposada by Terra Mana. Just Reposada? Just Reposada. Wow.

She is a slut. It's fine. Hardcore. I have a headache. Only the best of us can drink.

That's ridiculous. That was neat and good. Nice, nice. I love it. Felene also does that.

Welcome slut. Tequila's my jam. What can I say? It is. It is.

I'm glad you called it out, but it looks like you're drinking the same thing. I am not. I am drinking the... I'm drinking a white Negroni. Oh yeah.

With... It came in a different glass this time. Haruko? Roku Gin. Roku Gin.

Which is not a local gin, don't you? No, it's not. I'm sorry. I just... Japanese.

Japanese, they like perfect everything. Their whiskies, their gin, their sake. I'm sorry. Rice logger. Oh, their rice logger.

Okay, I have your first Japanese rice logger and I can't remember the name of it. I have one here. I don't know what that is. That's what I'm getting next. Oh.

Rice-based. I am now sad. Rice logger. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was thinking like a long.

First started... Long story. So we first started in what, April? And then the next August, we were just starting to do inventory. And I went to California and everywhere we went there was the best Japanese rice loggers.

I was like, oh my god, we have to have this. And we have one. Ichigo. We do the ichigo here. That's the one I had.

I can't do normal beer. I have allergy to weirdness. Well, I might be getting drunk on this coffee. Making up tequila. We got tequila shots, everybody.

Are you okay being on camera? Consent? Yeah, it's like Tuesday. Okay. We need consent.

It has to be consent two ways. I'll just move some cocktails out of the way if y'all don't mind. Just for like having them on the same table. Oh, yeah. Can I put them on this?

Yep. This is one of the things that makes us the best. Our staff are really, really good at following all the logs. Karen. We do that.

I was over here like... Thank you for following the Utah laws. They know me. They're like, mm-hmm. She's not the one.

No, no, no. She doesn't want it. Woo-hoo. Look, you are naked. Look at you.

Mm-mm. I like the Blanco, too. Thank you very much. Thank you. But I mostly love that my things are cute.

Thank you. Gracias. Anything else? More water or anything like that? I think we're good.

Thank you. Thank you so much. Do you need another drink while we're here? Yeah. Okay, we're good.

Just kidding. Just kidding. No. I went challenge accepted. I can't have everyone watch.

Oh, yeah. So that was a win. Because I saw your empty glass. I know. Everybody...

Stacie has an empty glass. We can't have that on the podcast. We all need a round of what we just had to bring it back to the table after we finish waiting. Yeah. There you go.

Start and finish. Oh my god, I like you. Nobody's driving you home today. I don't even know. You're headed back to the hotel.

I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited.

I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited.

I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited.

I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. All right. Cheers.

I usually do too. It's not a sipping. No, but it is. Because I'm a baby. That's what happens when you get into your forties.

Yes, exactly. All right, bottoms up. So which brand is that? I have to like... Oh, okay, should I?

Redsade. That was smoother than I thought it was really. It was really good. I'm guessing that one's gonna be okay. I have to like...

I have to like... It was really good. Did it burn? Oh, this one. Mine might go in like two-fourths.

That's very good. It might be that straight afterburn. I just have to double-pick the line. When people talk about shots, I'm like, go fuck yourself. Please, I didn't.

It burns for me. Oh, no. Put it in my mouth. Dressing and... Don't burn it.

I said, no more of the fucking mouth. I told you it was so spicy. Fun stuff. I actually said that was the name of the podcast. And I read the text closer to her mouth, and I was like, oh, because I was like looking at it on Spotify, and I was like, I did it wrong.

I didn't say anything. So we've changed our names a couple times. We were Tits, Tats, and Tacos originally. But... We didn't realize we had Tits when we went.

Well, that, and I feel like if we wanted a lot more businesses to kind of like jump in and like help us, maybe you don't want to be associated with the word Tits. Nothing wrong with Tits, but... Yeah. I'm just like... I'm going to change it to Tipsy, because we're all like Tits.

And the people like looking, you know, at podcast, Tits, and it's like... I mean, listen to our midnight podcast. What do we do? What is it called? ASMR?

ASMR? Hold on. It's just like zoomed in on our boobs. That's in? That's just talking and it's just zoomed in.

At the midnight hour, you get ASMR. Do you have tattoos on your feet, too, though? Click, click, click, click, click. That's an identity. I do.

I know. And it like totally fucked me over. Makeup. I can do it. Oh, I got a...

Oh, we're trying to put tattoos on. I got a mushroom on my foot. And I completely forgot I had it. I have tattoos all over my feet. I was not pointing a head.

I didn't see it. Oh, so do I. I didn't see the... I didn't think about it. ...finger, and I couldn't be a retired by now, but I actually have really cute toes.

You have teeth. But... We can all go in on the couch together. Hey, let's go on a fancy one. I have tattoos on both my feet.

My toes are cute. I don't know that they're model cute, but they're cute. They're not ugly. No, my feet are named after a mole. But everybody's gonna know.

Okay. Wait. I'm gonna see your feet and toes. What'd you say? My feet are named after a model.

Shut up. I can't answer. My friends and I, they were like, we're totally starting a feet finder, right? And so we were like taking a dance, and I have a really cute little mole on one of my toes. And so Cindy Crawford...

Shut up, man. I can't answer. I can't. No, no. I'm 10.

So I have a little cute ball between my toes. And I always call it my overboard mole. My overboard mole. Overboard. Oh, yes.

Yes. Yes. I identify for my head. And if anybody really loved me, they'd be like, oh, she has a mole on her right here. Oh, I know who that is.

It would be all the tattoos. It would be the mole. That's it. That's the only I didn't find, Martha. Yeah.

I mean, you could. If they chopped your friend limbs. They can just replicate tattoos. It was a great friend. It was a great friend.

It's true. It's true. Okay. Of course, I don't have any allergies or anything, right? No, but we also wanted to let you know we are recording.

So are you okay with being on camera? You're on the camera. We need consent. No, not at all. You can see consent.

That's all. This is Jillian. She is the one that not only gave us our couple names, but also gave us our And you guys are super close to Dangerous Pretzel. Yeah. And they have like, I was literally there, I think, last week because my daughter asked for pretzels and I had already marked it on like in my Instagram and I was like, oh, let's go here.

And I got their jalapeno honey pretzel. And I was like, okay, what is this? Yes, please put it on my mouth. Yeah. And then I saw on your guys' menu that's like, stand here and they'll deliver.

I'm like, yes. Yeah, I need six pretzels. ASAP. Just for her. We're going to have to order for all of those.

My phone is being occupied. Our space is so tiny that we don't have a kitchen here. So we were like, oh god, what are we going to do for food? And they opened up like shortly after we did. We're like, hey.

Yeah. We got that. We pay for a little bit of their kitchen space and it works so great. That's awesome. That's awesome.

Well, like, and I know it, Dick and Dixie's. They are connected to that ramen bar and they have like the window and like you can also like get, I mean, there's quite a few bars that are like, scan this and you can like get a pizza or like. Or like food trucks that are. Yeah. I was going to say, have you ever thought of food?

We're like going outside of the questions. But no, have you guys ever thought of doing like food trucks? Well, 40, 35, 40 percent of all the things we did for this bar were actually done in Dick and Dixie's. Potentially. Oh yeah.

We spent a lot of time there. I love Dick and Dixie's. So yes. It's a great bar. We just try our best.

But also like your previous bar. I was going to say that. What's that venue? I know the bar. I don't know the venue.

Literally right across the street. Venue? Oh, greenery. Like music venue. Venue?

Music venue. That's right by Dick and Dixie's. Oh, Dick and Dixie's. Because I like lived at Dick and Dixie's because I'd always go and see the most underground, like Cholly Tuna before Hayden came big. Was my first concert there.

And I was like, oh my God, I love it. You can see all these like no names. It was basically CBGB when we didn't really have a CBGB. That's my plug. We're done.

I'm done talking. It's cool. I'm old as fuck. It's lame. I know.

I know. I know. Let's calm down. Slow it down. Okay.

Older people in the room. Older people in the room. I think you might be the youngest one here. Yeah, but I got it. Oh my.

Yeah. I was like, you're actually the youngest here. Own it. She's old as fuck and so we're old as what? We're fossils.

You guys are aged in crying wine. I should like decide. I'm sorry. We're on our way back to you. Like you guys are like, you're re-circling.

I'm not the oldest fuck. You guys have re-circled where you're like, you hit your youth. I have all the knowledge. You have. He's a beacon.

Your kids will think it's trash. Oh, totally. Like what are you talking about? Yes. Well, when they're teens, they're like, hopefully I'm going to have children.

I need all of the like negative. We will give you. I want to just, the only like my thing is like making sure my daughter knows love and kindness and that I can hold a safe space for her to talk to me. That's all I want. That's all I want.

Ditto. Yeah. That's all I can hope for. I go for my nieces as long as I'm like a, you feel comfortable, which I do. I have guys, I have made it.

Wait till they get older. The mood does a huge shift. I thought the same thing with my nieces and like the oldest who's 16. I'm not raining. I'm giving you advice.

You might have to shift the mood. Can I just share my like. You want to shave your raining parade? So we went to the West Jordan days. Little festival.

Yeah. I don't know. 24th day. No, we're not to the 24th yet, but go ahead. You know, all the fucking.

Yeah. Yeah. No, that's not until the 24th. I'm not from here. So I don't know.

Oh, that thing. Yes. The one nobody apparently was there because of the stupid West Valley one. Everyone was terrified to go because of the shooting worked out in our favor because we just wrote all the fucking rides like full time. Um, but Miami's come to me.

She's like, do you see that boy over there? I'm like, oh, here we go. Here we go. I see that. Guys, I got so much dish.

Her mom comes over. What do you guys talk about her? Nothing. Walks away. I'm like, I made it.

She's like, what were you guys talking about? Like, I'm like, she's like, oh, do I get to know? Like, no, no, no. But you're fine. You're safe.

But also, no, no. Mom never gets to know. No, my mom never gets to know. My moment. Oh, I was going to say if it was bad, don't worry.

There was a follow up with the other niece that had a problem with the boy. And I was like, all right, boy bullying her. He's here with his dad. What's our next steps? I go beat him up.

And she was like, no, you don't do that in public. I'm like, you may not do it, but I'm very willing to do this in public. You could just be an unhinged crazy lady. I don't even have to be associated with you. I'm just, I'm not psycho at West Jordan days.

It's like the meme and it's on a movie. I can't remember the names of the two characters, but it's like, yeah, I can't tell you. Like, no, you don't need to go do anything. Oh, OK. So you don't want me to go do anything.

OK. I understand. It's the break up. It's the break up. I understand.

With his son and what's his second friend at the door. He's like, oh, OK. OK. I don't need to go do anything. No, yeah, yeah.

You don't. Yeah, we're not doing anything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, but for real. Yeah.

I feel like that's what's wrong with your eyes. Italians react all the time. I'm like, OK, yeah, I won't. I won't do anything. Sure.

Well, how do I? What's his handle again? OK. No, no. He's like an eight year old and I'm like, oh, Gator.

The mom. No, we don't. No, we fucking. He's eight. I don't fucking care.

I'm going to loosen those nuts on his skateboard. I'm going to beat him in public. But his dad's with him? Say fucking let's go. Something's going to happen.

All right, let's rate it in. What happened to kindness and love? I hate that we're touching our daughter. But also be kind. I'm an adult.

I can do what I want at this point. But as an aunt, aunts don't have to be kind. It's true. I mean, they do, but not to the people that they hate. My daughter is Croatian and Italian.

She's going to have a whole fucking lot of spice in her. A whole fucking lot. OK. But we're going to try to project kindness. And if somebody fucks with us, sorry.

Sorry for your fucking life. I'm sorry for your fucking life. I gave you kindness and that's what you gave in return. Good luck. You're going to die.

This is what we always do. I'm actually fine. I'm fine. I get so much pressure with like canned questions. Here's what we're going to ask you.

I'm like, oh, I'm going to fuck off. I'm sorry. We hate interviews. I feel that. It's kind of like, pretty slow.

We've had so many photo shoots in the last six months and we're always like, what am I doing with my arms? Wait, who was your photographer? So many. But like eight different ones. And then there was this one and he was like, just be natural.

And we're like, OK. And then we worked. Did you do that cool thing where you're like skipping magazines? No. We didn't post it.

If I just drop, oh, fuck me. Oh no. We got off the hook because it was between my legs. And they didn't post any photos. I was like, yeah.

Cool. We were natural. OK. Have you guys seen the movie Mastermind? Has anybody seen Mastermind?

Oh my God. I fucking love that movie. And when they're doing their engagement photos, I want to do that with someone. Please. Because they're like, oh.

When they're like, he's like laying on her ass and she farts and he's like, you're just farting. Uh, podcast photos. Because my husband has a joke that we should do, like the cliche, like. The glamour shots. Mervyn.

Oh my God. Jacey Penny. My oldest child. I want to do that so bad. Like four to nine.

Every time I'd be like, OK, I'm going to take a picture, he'd be like. Oh shit. Ready. Fucking ready. That's how my daughter is.

And she's always like, take a picture. Like what? And she'll be like, oh, Kmart special yourself. Every time I want to go. She'll get his stuff down.

It's in their jeans. Yeah. It transferred out of our souls. No, I am not a camera person. Like, but you did the glamour shot.

My daughter, she's like. Have you ever seen pictures of you that look like poo? She's always. Always. I don't know what the fuck my good side is.

I don't know what. It's all side. Natural. That's fine. This is your good side.

I have all of it that you found out. Maybe it's me. No, I don't. I have all of it. I literally.

Anytime I see a picture of myself, I'm like, what the fuck? When I see a picture of me, like, I know, but I see what it looks like. You can. My favorite is what other people point out. Is that a fake smile?

Like, first of all, first. Second of all. Yes. I have a picture where I was like, you know, I'm not even paying attention. No picture was taken.

I was like, oh, that's actually a hundred percent me. What I look like. Definitely. My nieces. I've ever known.

My nieces do that all the time in person. They'll like put this phone like underneath or like here and I'm all. Do they do that? And I'm like. Why do they do that?

Wait. I said that to my friend. I'm like, what the fuck is that? I do a like, we can see. I have to.

My friend does like that. I mean, I have nothing to do with it. But OK, so I've been single for like 10 years. And genetically, we have so many kids, right? Yeah.

But my sister-in-law also genetically has so many kids. And I'm single for 10 years. Because I want one date with this guy. And I was texting my sister-in-law and my one kind. And she and I were talking about how many chins we had.

And I was like, I have so many chins. I can dress them up and they won't even know who they are. And I like put this scarf around it and like took a picture of all my chins with the scarf around it. Then unfortunately, I send it to the guy that I only got one date with. And then I was like, oh.

They're called the wrong guys out there. No, not meant to be. That would have been really fucking endearing. The universe did that on purpose. That would have been really fucking endearing to the right guy, though.

Right. Like, honestly, that's not the right one. Sorry about it. I have a story on this. He's like, yeah, I went out on one date with this girl.

And then she sent me her chins. And I think I just sent like, I put a scarf on it. And I was like, it might be a lot of folds, but at least you can dress up nice. And I sent it. And it was definitely not.

So anyways, I've been single for over a decade. That's why. That's healthy. You know what? I will give you my number.

Feel free to send me all of those. Because that's why I'm so hilarious. Right? I think my favorite ever is my sister-in-law. She sent back.

She like, just this. And she wrote like on every fold. It was like, I heart Y-O-U. And I was like, see? And why are you not, why are you married to my brother?

And not me. I don't like you. I remember the trend of like the talking chins. Yes. So I've done that with people where I've done talking chins.

So it's just my chin, but lips. And then I do the eyes and your teeth. I love that. I love that. We should do that.

We should do that. That's fun, huh? Right? We're all like, nice. We're just all full of cover pictures.

And it's cut and retake. You bitches are too crazy. They're like, this is episode two of your revamp. I'm not sure. I cannot edit this.

You guys are too much. This is gonna cost $100, $300 extra. Go. We want to do upside down chinies, okay? I don't have a strong chin line.

I want to do this. You went to girls camp? I mean, he was raised Mormon in Utah, but you went to girls camp and you did like the thing where you wore the arms and legs. Okay, well I'm not Mormon, but I did that because I was just a weird girl. I went to young women's because I was, they, my, yeah, my neighborhood was very inviting and they were like, you can tell them.

And I was like, oh my god, I love this. No, they actually didn't want to convert me. My neighbor knew, she knew, she was very weird. We weren't converting. So, but they, they were just more inviting, like, yes, she can come and do all of these things with us, which I felt very lucky and involved.

I know it is very rare. So like, I felt very lucky that I got to go to young women's, but also what's the one camp that you only get to go to for like two years? Oh yeah, youth conference. Youth conference. Yeah.

Like, and it's like, I'm going to bear my testimony and. You did? I exited before that. Like, it's like, oh, young women's camp. Yeah, it's every year though.

All right. But youth conference is like, isn't that EMY or something? I don't know. I was asked that. You have to pay for that.

What is BFY? Or BYU? BYU, Idaho or BYU. I don't know. I wasn't Mormon, but I know my friends would go to EFY.

EFY. Especially for like Hawaiians. Yeah, right there like E-F-E-Y. Especially for Hawaiians. That's what the fans call it now.

Oh, I thought you were joking. Okay. Oh, do you remember that? I have to go to EFY. So many.

And one's like. F-D-L-S. F-D-L-S. Without the extra moms. I only have one mom, thank God, because my mom and my dad are not on their own.

But. Hey, I watched, what is it? Big, big life? Love. I've never seen that.

Do we want to get into this? Let's ask them the question. Yeah, I agree. This is getting back on track. This is getting way more interesting than this.

But we want to entice people to come up here. Yes, it's true. We want people to come. They're not Mormon anymore. I don't know what gave it away, but I feel like it's more not of the Mormon practice.

Feel free to come to belly poly. Or even if you are. Yeah. They have mom towns. They have water, they have soda, and they have mock towns.

Everybody come. We actually have amazing mom towns and NA beers and NA wines and sparkling wines. We actually have an NA following. They're like, oh, NA cocktails are good. Oh, see?

Everybody come. They're not terrible. Yeah, I feel like there are some not terrible non-alcoholic options out there. We have the best day cold. It's literally my favorite.

I buy a half-pump and drink it. Sorry, what was it called? Best day. It's an NA. We were at USANA for the Incubus show and I had a non-alcoholic beer and it can't feel like me.

It was probably athletic. It was athletic. Not terrible. It's okay. But it tastes like no one else will like beer.

The IPA one tasted more like, I don't like IPA, so I was like, oh, you taste like an IPA. I still don't like it. You still don't like it? But that's okay. And I will say, I looked at your guys' snack menu.

For you guys not having a kitchen, your snack menu is on point. I was very excited. These guys can attest. You guys having the Lazease baba ganache. Oh my god, that's one of my most favorite things.

I love it so much. And then you guys also have like dangerous pretzel right next to you. Like your snack menu, more than that, is like on point too. We're sponsored by Dangerous Pretzel. No, we're not.

Or Lazease. Neither. But they do it right. And actually we just brought in these grape leaves and I'm obsessed. Doughnuts.

Oh yeah, they have doughnuts. I'm gonna need your entire inventory. Yeah, in my mouth. Let's do that. Let's do that menu.

We need our food. So this is their, hold on, this is their, you guys can't see close up, but this is their cute, all of their little menus. We'll take pictures. How about, did you want to see it? Sorry.

Careful. So these are new menus. Shalene has been branding some leather for our covers. Oh, cute. Okay, we're gonna get, I guess we're gonna get into the questions now because we want to dive a little bit deeper with you two.

So you brand your own leather. I'm sorry. I mean, it's a question. We might go off topic a whole lot. Okay, so how did you guys meet and then what inspired you to open a bar together?

Because I know sometimes a partnership can be like, yeah, we're still trying to figure out this partnership. They're like a marriage, right? Yeah, luckily this is the best life experience I've ever had. I mean, you would know. From your previous bar.

Yeah, exactly. You kind of know the backstory there. But so far this partnership has been amazing. Like we agree or disagree and we don't fight. I love that.

That's great. So we actually, we did. I get three no's before I get a yes. I strategically plan out what I ask for. I guess I'm the no person on things.

No, she's not. She's actually the best. I would not be in business if I'm being paid for a job. She's like, hey, because I'm like, I was supposed to. I just worked on a film for so long and I was just like, and it's going to be this and then without this, it's not going to be everything.

You're like, we have a million dollars and it's going to go to all of this. Nope. It's a nice try. Maybe on the next time. That's why she tries three times.

I told her, I was like, hey, here's the thing. After three no's, you have to give me a yes. And she's like, okay. Then I a couple of times went through that cycle and she's all, I feel like you're doing this strategically. I'm like, it's not my fault.

She's like, I just know you by now. And so I'm sorry. But we actually met during dinner. The secret. Secret.

Oh, yeah. There is in like, I went about it very quickly. What's that? Oh my God. What's the Salt Lake magazine?

I think it's Salt Lake. Salt Lake magazine. SLC. City Weekly. Slug.

Slug. Thank you. It was a slug. Yeah. I have a crush on her.

I know. She's freaking cute. Sorry. There was a woman I worked by in the most amazing cardigan jacket thing. I'm with someone.

Oh, I am too. Like the amount of times I've like actually helped my cousin like hook up with somebody. Like we were at an EDC concert and I was in the bathroom. And this girl. Did you say EDC concert?

I did. I was just checking in. I'm sorry. I know. I just wanted to go with them.

But you brought them up. We were in it. And I was in the bathroom. And the vibes from this girl was just like giving me like, you and my cousin would be amazing together. So I literally was like, do you have a boyfriend?

And she was like, no. And I was like, come meet my cousin. And they were together for like two years. She had issues. But they are like the vibes.

I was just like, I can be everybody's wing woman. You with her? Yes. Make it worse. Someone who can attest to being her wing woman.

I've been, I have matched like multiple couples all in one still together. And I've been the officiant at multiple weddings and those weddings and those marriages are awesome. Oh my god. Yay! I'm getting a thing done.

High five. All the weddings we've initiated are still going strong. One just renewed her vows this weekend. Oh yes. That's right.

As an officiant, do you like take pride in that? Oh, I have a whole badge that I'll fucking wear. I go cheesy. I'm sorry. I go way cheesy.

I feel like you guys could be on, not like a priest, but I kind of feel like I'm like blessing you. Oh. Saying the words that you're committing to. Like that's a thing. So yeah.

Have you only done like people you know or have you done anyone that you don't know yet? Okay, because I did my first two couples this year that I am, they just found me on like the website where they initiated and I initiated them. Oh, I was a little freaked out so my husband had to come with me to the first one to make sure I didn't get like, you know, kidnapped. They were the sweetest couple though and it was just them and their moms and their moms were just like camera happy in the back but they were not in the way and I was like, oh my god, this, we love this. So cute.

It was so great. Kate, have you guys watched Love or Married at First Sight? I watched Married at First Sight every time I'm like, oh. But the- I could not be that officiant because they just say the same shit every time and they're like, it's probably not going to happen but we're going to see it. Who was the- he's like the, one of like the professionals, right?

They have like the counselor and he's like the- The pastor. The pastor. The pastor. That's you. That's you.

You guys are the pastor. No, but then- Watch your mouth. I'm not being that- No, because he's like every marriage that I'm like- He's way cooler than I could ever be. I've been wearing half the shoes she wears now. Also, like pastors are- he doesn't even- ceremonies, they like just bring someone in- No, he doesn't like in like at like Love at First Sight but like how he's been like all the marriages that I have like officiated like and like counseled and blah blah blah.

I'm going to be honest. I haven't either. That sounds amazing. Oh my god. It's real.

Watch Mary at First Sight. I do have to ask you though because maybe it's just me and I don't know. Do you like chat, chippy tea, like free whatever I'm told to do. I'm not going to do a simple Marius. No big deal.

I'm like we need to make this one. I'm going to take A. So- And I'll get like a cute little poem not like Corinthians blah blah blah blah. Not the typical. I'll get like a cute little like blurb.

My first tattoo was Proverbs. I was like- Listen, it's like- But you know, it's kind of been nerd on that with wedding vows. So don't do that but I definitely do like cutesy like let me just insert an extra little five minute blurb that you probably didn't ask for but you know what? Your mom's recording this and you'll think me later. Maybe not.

I'm not ready to be before chat. She was saying because I'm- Well, I say chat, chippy tea now before it was like look at all these poems. Not true. True. But I- You look great for 95.

Thank you. I actually- She found the count of me. My birthday was- Should we call you Mr. Burns? My birthday was the end of May and I thought I won- Oh my god, May's birthday.

May's. Yeah. Wait, end of May? Hi, beginning of June. June 9th.

June 2nd. Yeah, June 9th. Burned my 40th heart. Okay. But I thought I was my age for an entire year and found out two days before my birthday, I was like- I was like- Oh, I hate that.

Oh. Yeah. But this happened to me before. But luckily it was this one time that I just was going back so I'm now 42 for the second time. Woo.

That's exciting. Yeah. You're like Phoebe reliving her life again. I love this. I'm going for you.

I'm sorry. I love you. You know what? From here moving on, it's going to be fantabulous. That's right.

Because we're going to share phone numbers and you're going to send me all the creepy videos that you don't send to your potential- Partner. Love interests. Yes. You send them to me. I'm literally like- And I'm like, yes, send it on to the partner because this is a betting opportunity.

I'm into you. I'm one week out of a three and a half year release. Which is the healthiest and longest I've had since- Congratulations. I'm still willing to do your betting process if you still need it. No, 100% I need it.

I don't know what the fuck I'm doing. I thought- Girl, I'm married and I don't know what I'm doing. We're great wing women. Really great. That's what I heard.

Now we know. Yeah. I will be so interested in the person who's friends with the person she's talking to for hours. Hours. That's what we do.

We might have some PTSD. Alright, okay, zoom in. We got through one question. Zoom in, I know, that was one question. It's my fault.

I'm like, we have- That's why I'm bringing it back. We have 37 questions and some of them will go like that. We might be lucky if we get like five solid questions in. Okay, so that's not a question. It's not on the list.

I'm just sleeping. Not on the list. Okay, so, okay, so dip. Anyway, what inspired you to open your first bar and then what made you want to do it again? Oh man, what a story.

I'll try and keep it short. You don't have to. Have you ever had that drunk conversation where you're like, hey, we should open a bar. I feel like everybody knows. Always, and nobody wants to open a bar with me.

That was so cool. And then you actually do it. This was not- That's how it started. Yeah, this was round one. Yes.

And then I was like, oh god, I've never even worked in a bar before, so what the fuck am I doing? And I didn't know and I figured it out. So that's how round one went. You frequented bars, so you know what it's about. I know how to do it.

Not the same. You have an idea, right? There's someone that's never worked in a bar. Yep, I go to a bar. I know what bar goers want.

It's like people that drink coffee, they know where it is. Yeah. It's so cute. It's so sleeping. That one though, I had terrible partner.

Well, one was great. The other two were nightmares. And after year one, I was just doing it by myself. And figuring it out. But eight years later, I was like, I think I'm done with this place now.

And I sold it a couple of months ago. Yay! I don't know if you guys have been there, but it totally turned into a club. We walked by there the other day and I was like, this does not feel like the same place. And then I realized we're not the owner anymore.

I was like, well that makes perfect sense. Well, it honestly just became a college hangout. Which is, you know, the money is great. That's what you wanted it to be. I was like, college guys are cheap.

They'll try and skip out on their own issues. They throw plastic against the wall. They're anger management issues. They rip the bosses legit out of the sleep. I was dumb enough.

I was like, you guys are animals. That's crazy. Maybe they don't know we're drinking if we're upset. That's insane. Maybe they're upset.

I think they think it's like, you know what? Maybe if you can't be an adult that you are now, you should not go out in public. Maybe it's a dream. Yeah. So I was like, eh, it's a wrap here.

Are you sold? Yes. Well, meanwhile, like before I sold, Shalene approached me and she was like, hey, do you want to open another lesser? I was like, no. I was legit in a hospital bed, dying.

Okay, I'll let you tell the truth. Oh, that was gorgeous. I had no idea what was happening. They were like, I mean, you'll either go home in five days or you'll die. Wow.

I was like, cool. That's fun. I'm not even 40, so here we go. Yikes. It was a Wednesday, but yeah.

Okay, yeah. Same thing. And I found out I had done the secret SLC event together and they were so cool. It was a good hit. It was also very connected.

It's over. We just had it. Yeah. All I could do was New Year's and going into 18. You were 18?

I was 17, 18. And just, so I could text her and I was like, hey, so if I get out of this hospital bed, I'll just let you know. It's a whole shit again. First of all, the world needs it. Second of all, the Salt Lake doesn't have any of it.

And she's like, yeah, 100%. And we thought it would be super fun to have a little coffee shop, record store, like vinyl shop. Maybe a space. Yeah. A little speakeasy if you even know where to find it.

I would have spent enough to hire a salary. I still might. You still open this up? Well, some of it. All of my money.

It just three blocks away and they actually. But it's not you. Only killed it. No, it's not. So we still might.

We don't know what's up next. We're gonna have to figure something out. We went in the about out of the hospital, equal nine. We walked in for the first time ever. April 28, 2000.

Oh my God. Twenty. Five. No, three. Three.

It's been two. It's already been two. Twenty-three. And no, it's been two and a half years. We're coming up on it.

It's been a while. And we've only been open for seven months. So for context, that's how long it takes. Oh yeah. We walked in.

Wow. All these walls were cinder block. Like what you see right there. Like what was that? The exposed part.

But not stained. Just like graffiti everywhere. It's so beautiful. I love this place. It's so cute.

Oh, it's got so much graffiti. I mean nothing was in here. It's 150 hopefully. Yeah. Oh wow.

I never would have thought that. No, no, no. She carries all her own little creeks and grounds and gifts. Oh my God. I love that.

You know what? Now I'm like the living clients and like the goofy vibe. Yes. We get it. Yeah.

Love the like. Like honestly, you guys did such a great job. Like honestly, this is a beautiful space. It really is. I like that it's like cozy.

It's intimate. Thank you. That's the word. Like intimate and cozy and like niche almost. Like it's got character.

Like I never would have thought this was 150 year old building. Never. I would have assumed you guys kind of like. I assumed you built it. Did this.

Oh no. Literally every piece in here has a story. The posts that are holding up the bar, they came from a headboard and the frame around that mirror is an old screen door that we got. The wood paneling is a whole story. We were like, Go, go, go.

We're like, okay, let's do this palette wall. Like we can totally do this. So we find these palettes. How awkward. I'm the one that says we can totally do that.

And she normally is like, She's like, yeah, absolutely. A dollar a palette. Yeah, a dollar a palette. So we get 80 palettes. 90.

80. Or eight. A lot. They come and deliver downstairs and there's a stack. They're straight from Italy.

They bring over Italian boots. So they're like wood kilns, like all the things. And we're like, all right, let's get to work and start breaking these things down. We had all the aspirations. We thought we were going to just do it in like, we were both like, yeah, he's going to be there at one.

Maybe a weekend. It's going to be fun. And then we like, I had something to do at five. I think she had to pick up Isaac at like 30. We're like, yeah, we'll just like bring him down like four, four and a half hours.

Yeah, we've done so much in that. Yeah, easy peasy. We literally spent like way too long trying to get one palette for you guys trying to ever pull apart. Yeah, it's awful. Four hours went by and not even one palette was broken down.

I was just trying to demo it. I wasn't trying to be using it. I was just trying to disclose it. Like, no, we want to do it. I know.

And it's taken us forever to get it apart. Oh, yeah. So we're like, oh, what are we going to do with this? We have now 80 palettes. We did some YouTube videos of how to break it apart.

And she was like, I'm going to go. And it's like, we definitely don't have the right taste for this. Oh my God. So I took a video of all the palettes and sent it to some friends and my kids and my partner at the time and friends. And we were like, he said we're going to show up.

And we had a whole crew. They pulled them apart downstairs and brought them up here. Using a saw to get the nails out. Yeah, we had a sawing group. We had a pooling apart group.

We had a carry up the stairs group and then a sanding group. Oh my gosh. It was a whole team operation. Wow. Four women and two brides.

We were talking about a string of 10. The assembly line tells the truth. Then one sweet of that, we did stain them all. No, we didn't have to sand them all. Well, yeah, after sanding.

But still, I did like two weeks of sanding. Just do it. Well, can you tell everyone that it went aw. Let's go back in please. You click it.

Yeah. We did stain pulls. So we would lay all of them out and stain them. Even when that stain color right now, we would just dump it on the next one without rinsing it. So it was fun.

But also the wood just kind of took on its own thing. So yeah, wood does. Wood always takes on its own thing. Depending on the grade of the wood and the type of wood, it just takes on the life of its own. But it looks beautiful.

It looks pretty. Very beautiful. It's so pretty. You guys did amazing. Oh my gosh, what a story.

That is so cool. It is so pretty. It really is. Every time I see the walls, I just remember, like, wow, I can see all the people that were here. So many hands touched it.

People wrote on the back and set the boards. They're all kind of like, I wish this was in the same spot. You're like, it's in there? Somewhere? It's so beautiful.

It's so great. I hope, yeah, I hope. And a hundred years if they take it down. Exactly. But like, so many things.

Just from that edge to that edge. This was a countertop bar that somebody posted on Facebook marketplace. They were getting rid of it. I was like, oh my God, it's the exact dimensions that we need after we do this. Perfect.

Yeah. So perfect. And she was like, I'll just come visit. And she has, like, a couple times. Oh, cute.

So it's so pretty. Almost everything in here has been handcrafted. Upcycled. Upcycled. I love this story.

That's the best. People come see their items. It is such an amazing thing. It is beautiful. And you can just tell.

It has its own personality and character. Yeah. You guys did that. That's really cool. We had a baby.

We did. And she's so polite. Yeah. So I guess, like, leading into that, like, how did the name Melancholy come about? Or like, what does that represent for you?

She's laughing. I mean, I feel like this is not a great suggestion. She's laughing. She's like, ha ha. But it's not really a great story.

I feel like the building is moody. And we were just kind of, like, trying to figure out what we wanted to call it. I think it was you. You were like, Melancholy. I love this.

I know, like, the second I walked in, it just was the word that hit my brain. I was like, it was either going to be Melancholy or Black Iris. But I didn't even know that we were going to actually do it. And then it just happened. And it's not black.

Everybody thinks it's black. It's actually dark blue. Blue and fucking moody. Go out and look at it. I have to do that because that's totally what I thought it was.

I thought it was black. I did not. Melancholy, like, the actual definition is all about nostalgia and being afraid of the dark. I was just like, I'm just going to let life take me. I need to go and not really put a lot on it.

Our tackling is come with it, leave without it. I love it. That's awesome. That's the best. But I feel like that fits the vibe.

It does. Yeah. There's nostalgia. Like, you know what went into the flow of it. Purchase.

Other people can build, like, oh, hey, it's at a bar now. I remember when this was out, like, a different place or in MySpace. That's what I thought. I really do. All of, like, that's the top of the headboard.

I think that's so fun. Oh, yeah. That's so fun. You have the cute little post office boxes down at the front of the bar. That's a whole new story.

It's really great stuff. It's just been, it's been cultivated. What about, like, the pictures? They're almost all there's content. Yeah.

A lot of them are from, like, these little bags that are over the shoulders. That's just the way the frame came from Amazon. And we were like, oh, we like the picture. We were literally like, we love it. That's amazing.

Everything else is actually vintage. Like, the vertical one is a Harper's. Oh, Harper's. Like, what? Like, there's like, the Abraham Lincoln actually is.

Like, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. It's weird. And you actually saw everything else on the resolve. Just the cat video. Because our vision is so limited.

So we ordered the frame and I was going to try and find something cool to go in it. Or, like, make sure it was like, huge cat on the shoulder. That's perfect. I'm a cat person. I have a cat on my foot.

Oh, well, that's fine. Love it. You relate. So do you guys, did you have, like, any mentors or influencers that helped, like, shape, like, this business ownership or, like, how you wanted to be, like, bar to, like? No.

We really didn't have a mentor. But I feel like that could have been really helpful. I feel like we had some that were supposed to be and we ended up just hanging on. Yeah. And it was a lot of expensive lessons.

Like, contractors and stuff contractors. Yeah. We would love to be a mentor to others. Trying to be the same. Just because, you know, we want to help others.

Especially women. Love that. Because they would be so helpful. Yeah. You know what I mean?

Like, if we had somebody that was like, and we would love so much things. It's just so. Yes. I went to a bar coalition meeting, I would say, and it was pretty sad to see, like, over 50 men there and, like, myself and two other women. Wow.

And crazy enough, at all of the DAPS monthly meetings that we go to, the only other owners that I know, that's not to say that the other women in the room are not owners. I don't, but, um, the two are owners of a SunCrab, which is a very gay bar. Yeah. That's great. We love you guys.

It's a lesbian bar. It's a gay bar. And it's really cool. I love it. That's what they're doing, but it's just all broken down in there.

All of the gags. Then Jack Lo, female thinner. There's one side of the whole world that I've come up with the last few years. Women are just amazing. It feels like women get discouraged though, because it is such a male dominated feel.

It's just intimidating for women to get into that gala. I know Second Summit. Miss Anika, right? Yeah. They were college best friends to women.

They were best friends in college, kind of same touch, crazy kids. And then they were like, wait, we actually like to be active, but we also like to drink. We do not do a sport like bar. But like active sports, not sports on TV. They have their cider bar, it has pickleball, it's gay, love it.

Oh, indoor gay. It's just, it's not hard. It's actually so good. And HK is doing some games as well. And Silent Cider as well.

We actually have a lot of women. We did a women-owned business bra last weekend. Yes, I saw that on your Instagram post. And it actually was so great to see how many people came out to support that. They weren't even women business owners necessarily.

They were just like, oh, we saw that, we wanted to support other women. And we got a bunch of hearts back. But people went to all the businesses. I love that. It was super fun to watch all the other, message us and be like, wait, we're from another team.

We're like, awesome. We said everyone to participate, but we didn't know. So the next one, you know. You need to create your own chamber of commerce for women-owned. They have one.

I actually haven't been to any of their events, but yeah, they do have one. It's a chamber. I have an idea for a bar that I would love to open. Yeah. I'm like, maybe you will help me.

Yeah, totally. Like, I want to open a bar that like, I mean, I don't know, up until a certain time, like it can host families. It's more for so like dancing. Like, I want to play like 80s, 90s, early 2000s. I just literally want to dance and not have somebody grind on me.

Yeah. Like, I want to go somewhere and be able to like dance. You might need to go to our first lesbian bar in yourself. Not lesbian, but like literally like bar to like, because well, no, okay. So nobody's.

They know who to be. No one grinded on you there. Well, no, no, because I was thinking in my head, like my family parties, my yearly, my family parties. Like, I love my family parties because like we always have a DJ and like my whole family, like my family parties is like over 130 people. Lovely.

Yeah. And so like we get up there and like everybody gets up there and dances and like whatever is playing, whatever. Like, and that's what I want to create for like a bar is like, like come and like come and dance and like have fun. And like up until 10 p.m. Like, sure, you can bring your kids and have fun.

And like after 10 p.m., like adults only type of thing. And but still the same type of vibe. And like anyway, because I'm like always like, I just want to dance. I just, I just want to dance. I just want to dance.

I think a big part of this place too for us is like, what is the vibe you're going for? Like, what's the theme? And I was like, I have to say it. So I had to start and I'm saying like, I don't know, I feel like I want it to be putting on that old favorite pair of sweatpants. My favorite hoodie for months.

I know that still kind of fits, but just bring you to the most comfortable. You know, you fit in, you know, it's going to be good. You don't have to worry about anything. Show up and you're going to be the best. Salt enough music that you can celebrate people as we get older and we all get in.

That's awesome. Hey, moody as fuck. We're going to hit our right lights right now. Just go do her. Okay, well, I won't ask you that question now.

Yeah, no, that's too hard question. Like you just want to run do something good. Yeah, I think honestly. I mean, you just basically describe like the personality like of your bar. Like this is what it is.

This is a moody bitch. Yeah, so like what's one design or decor detail you absolutely had to like include in here? Like you guys saw like that headboard or this that you were like, so many. But once we saw them and it was weird because I worked on the film set of Yellowstone and they were like, I just look back and then we yeah, like I clean them up and then my dad built the box and then we corporate into the bar. It's like everything.

They're really cool. We found out about this antique store just down the road and he was like, oh yeah, they're from the Yellowstone set. Yeah, because it was gone. Yeah, we're like, oh, we have to have me. Yeah, my sister-in-law.

I feel like they should have just gave them to you. I'm working on it. I wanted a huge glamour mirror, which we got, which actually broke, which I love that. It's a whole different story. It's a gorgeous mirror.

And I think. It was the post office box from the mirror. Yeah, like obviously. We wanted plants. Yeah, there's a lot of plants in here.

Except for. Shut up. Those are all fucking really. How do you water that? Okay.

That's what I have in here. That one, those ones and that window. Everything else in the whole place is real. Wow. The skies are all real.

Wow. That's amazing. Talk to them. Yeah, I was wanting to talk to those, but I was like, there's no one. Those ones are not real.

But they're beautiful. They're really great. Thank you. Okay, so who has the green thumb? Both of you?

I think both of us. Guys, I've kept a bonsai tree alive for seven months. Okay, I just got one in June. It's flourishing. Help me.

Like it's not dead. But I, like ever since I moved into my own place, like I'm getting more plants. It's how I have a prayer plant. I don't like it's like it. Okay, it's supposed to, yes, it goes out like in the morning and at night.

Well, no. Just send me your address and a time and a date that works for you and I will come. Oh, thank you, please. Because like she, at night she goes up. But some of the leaves started getting like brown spots.

And I was like, okay, this is a water problem. It's a prayer lily. Well, no, I think it was like a peacock something. I can't remember. But she's like, no, stop talking.

I know what it is. It's like in a funeral booth, who's painting that in this kept alive. It's not kept alive. No, I got it at Trader Joe's. Oh, you went searching for it.

No, I was just at Trader Joe's and I saw it and I was like, oh, this is so pretty. I love it. I'm dying. She hasn't made too many funerals to acquire that. But I'm like trying to have like and apparently that's like I was looking for a plant that was like red and it has red under leaves because it's the money corner of my house and you're supposed to have a red plant in that house.

And so I was like, okay, this this will do donkey like it has the red under part. So and then it started getting brown spots on the leaves and I figured, okay, because I have hard water. So I went like now I go buy really good water and I've been feeding it really good water. It's doing amazing. But I like I took out like all of the brown leaves, right?

Like which you're not supposed to take more than like a 30 percent out at a time. So like I take it so it's like give it some wind. Yes. So it's grown a whole ton of new leaves and more coming in. But I've noticed it's not going up at night anymore.

It's just this. So it's not doing this. Sometimes I feel that as I get older, things don't do that anymore. Yeah, yeah, but she's great and beautiful. So I still love her.

Yes. Yes. I didn't give her any. Oh, we need to be. This is not about me.

This is about them. So you get one more question. One more question. Let's wrap it up. Okay.

One more question. One more question. Pressure's on. Can we come back? We are already an hour and a half.

Oh, you guys. One more question. Let's wrap it up. All right, Blane. Okay, then we'll do this.

How do you choose the drinks and aesthetic? Well, we already figured out the aesthetic. How do you choose the drinks for your bar? And was there like a theme that you initially were going for? Like was this the theme that you guys were initially going for?

I mean, we didn't even want to do a wine bar. The space called for it. We were like, wine and cocktails, this has to be it. Aesthetic-wise, we went through many different spaces. We like this and we like this.

And then we settled. It kind of just all pieced together. We were like, we love this. Well, let's stain with cement and see how it turns out. Are we doing green?

Are we doing blue? I call this my 30-hour wall. It's just like cladding barrels and cinder block and we used all the different stains. And finally, none of it's working. We have to cover it up.

We're just like, no, absolutely not. It's going to be the best. It's going to be fine. So with the aesthetic, I guess that kind of curated your bar menu. No, we worked for Barstaff Curia.

They all collaborate. They pick a different liquor and then they roll with it. And they get to create something. So we're doing spring, summer, fall. Okay, I have one more question.

And then that's it. So on the like, even though if you're here, if you find time, you're like, this calls for a drink tasting time or whatever. Like, what is your go-to drink and reason to like, that's my go-to drink. Okay, I know what yours is. Tequila.

Why does everyone else just take that? I'm a tequila lover. No judgment. Congratulations. For many reasons.
