Drum Making Ritual: Buffalo Hide & Ancestral Healing

Drum Making Ritual: Buffalo Hide & Ancestral Healing

In This Episode

Courtney and Jaime pull the Ace of Pentacles and discover it's pointing directly at what they're about to experience: a full-day drum-making workshop that becomes far more than a craft class.

This episode is about honoring animals that have passed and what it means to channel that energy into a tool for healing. Jaime shares her journey from never having played drums to feeling called to make one—and how muscle testing led her to the exact hide meant for her, complete with the animal's spine imprinted down the center. Courtney walks through her own experience of becoming emotionally overwhelmed during the cleansing ritual, realizing she was witnessing a birth, not just a process.

They discuss the science behind drumming: how 40% of the population cannot access alpha brainwave states through meditation alone, but drumming for just 20 minutes shifts brain chemistry. Courtney shares a powerful story about a healer who drummed for a client in recovery, breaking an addiction craving in minutes.

The conversation moves into how drums become spiritual partners over time—how Courtney has bonded so deeply with hers that she brought it to Stonehenge, wrapped in her pajamas. She explains how the drum speaks through its tones, signaling blocks and openings during healing sessions.

Crystal of the Week: Fluorite, the focus stone. Jaime breaks down its connection to ADHD support, family healing, and the hidden beauty revealed under UV light.

Hey! Welcome to Practically Magick. I am one of your hosts, your local witch, Courtney Pearl, and this is... Jaime Osbahr, owner of Rising Moon Minerals. And your local crystal healer.

Yes. By the way, we're going to talk about drums today. Vinny's very interested because our drums were made of animal hide and he's like, I'm ready to chew that up. But we are excited to share our experience of our drum making class with you today. So that's going to be our main focus.

We're going to talk a little bit about the Crystal of the Week. So welcome to episode three. I'm excited. Let's pull a card to start our episode. Let's see what this has to do with maybe what we're going to talk about today.

I'm always curious to see if it falls in line with what I think we're going to talk about today or if it's going to direct what we're going to talk about today. I know it's always good. I have a really cool deck. I love this deck because it didn't come with a guidebook at all. And my husband got it for me.

It's Spencer's Gifts Tarot Cards, the Prism Edition. Prism Healing. Yes. Prism Healing. It's a chill one.

But it's all like, shiny. If you're watching on video, you can see it's really reflective. It's very Courtney, the imagery. I do like this deck because it's more fun than it is deep. But it's great for, I love bringing it out during Samhain because when people are into the Halloween spirit, this is like the perfect deck for that.

It's very much like the old fortune teller archetype. Okay. We have the Ace of Pentacles. Mandragora. I don't know much about a Mandragora in the mythology.

Every card in this deck has like a mythological creature of some kind or archetype. I don't know much about it. Oh, that's what it is. Yeah. So it looks like a screaming plant or like a...

That's exactly what it looks like. I'll show it on the video so those who can see it. Yeah. I bet that is exactly what it is. I think we should go over that.

Yeah. So what does this mean for us? Ace usually indicates new beginnings and Earth. Oh, this is interesting because I have been kind of drawn to connection to Earth lately with grounding, but also with connection to ancestors and kind of allowing yourself when you're grounding or connecting with ancestral, when you're connecting with the Earth to also allow your DNA to awaken to what ancestral memory you have there. So I don't know if that has anything to do with this, but that does have a lot to do with drumming.

So we'll get to that a little bit later, but I do find that drumming, especially those big drums, we're going to see yours in a minute. Those are definitely root chakra based. So the deeper that base drum, and when you're drumming, you kind of get that pull to the tribal connectedness, just like ancient times, you know, when people drummed as a community or it was part of their rituals and ceremonies and traditions. So I think there's going to be a lot that comes up for that. Anything come up for you when you see that?

Well, as you're speaking of it, like for me, I never really felt that connection to cards. I don't have that and that's okay. I just don't. I have a connection to crystals, but it actually goes really well with this book that I've been listening to. It's called When the Drummers Were Women.

It was a suggestion by the ladies that were helping us build our drums. So I've been listening to it and it's talking about going back like way, way, way back, like Paleolithic times, right? And the evidence that they were drumming, that they had drums, that they used drums, that the drummers in those times were women, mostly, right? And it's really, really just interesting to listen to this book and feel all those connections so, so far back. So it's connecting this card and what you're talking about is connecting with what we want to talk about, but it's also connecting with where I am in my journey right now.

So I think that's just really cool. Yeah. I can't wait to read that book because I think that that's kind of a reawakening. And I was kind of thinking about this actually this morning. I was kind of doing my meditation and my meditation, like we talked about in the last episode, was more like getting ready for the day, but without anything to listen to or watch or just letting my thoughts come in and out as I'm getting ready.

So shower thoughts, things like that. So I wasn't sitting meditating, although I did my morning pages this morning. I do that as a sort of meditative ritual, just writing. But I was coming back and thinking a lot about like for those with Scottish ancestry, for example, you listen to a song that's like the bagpipes or the island dancing music and you feel something. Most people do.

I mean, I haven't met anyone that doesn't, but I guess there are some people that maybe don't. But you feel this like turning on in your DNA. You feel this thing where you're just like awakening. Hits me somewhere. I always loved bagpipes.

I remember seeing bagpipes at the Indy 500 parade when I was a kid. We were in Minneapolis. So they had like the marching bands and stuff and they had the bagpipes. And I remember just being a little kid and being like, wow, I love that. And I didn't realize until later that a lot of people made fun of bagpipes as like the worst sounds and they were like, oh, that's screeching.

It's terrible. I thought that was wonderful. Maybe in a closed space indoors, it's not ideal. I understand. Or just one person playing bagpipes in your immediate space.

I totally get that. That's not pleasant. But all the bagpipes together outdoors and like, oh, there was something about it. And I was with a nursing kin group and we were going to learn some highland dancing together. One of our members has learned dancing.

She was like, I'm going to teach everybody. She turns on the music. And one of the ladies there was like, did you guys feel that? Did you feel your DNA turn on? And I was like, oh my gosh, that's what that is.

It is. It's like remembering your ancestry. It's written into your DNA, which is an actual thing. I mean, they're studying DNA now and epigenetics. And we know that it's not just what's passed on genetically, the egg and the sperm and all of that, but like what gets turned on by the environment around you.

And so your DNA would recognize things like music from your ancestral heritage and stuff like that. So sorry, that went a little long and into a whole thing. But my whole exposure to bagpipes was the band Korn. Oh yeah. Yeah.

You know, obviously a totally different thing. It's like alternative music from the nineties and they're playing bagpipes. And it was like this really cool thing. But again, like as you're talking about it, it's, I remember this, you know what I mean? Like I remember hearing that song and going, they're playing bagpipe.

I know. You know, it's almost like an accordion. How many times do you hear somebody play an accordion? I can't say that an accordion resonates with me very deeply or very, but that's also like, I think more Eastern European. I think where my bloodline comes from is more Western European, like England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, that area.

And then we also have some French in us and you know, things like that. So those are like, so as I'm listening to this book, I just want to say really quick, as I'm listening to this book, they're talking about a goddess that was in France. And I'm like picking my interest. And what did I do? And so yeah, it's all very interesting and it's all things that I think people are awakening to.

They are wanting to learn these things, not just like who's my grandma's grandma, grandma, or great, great, whatever. We're like, where does this really like go back to? And feeling it and not just learning about it, but also like the feeling of it. So I think that's just really cool. And I do want to say just to be clear that it doesn't always have to be your bloodline.

I mean, sometimes ancestral heritage is where you feel called or resonated with. And there is some connection to that is that some people feel so drawn to something like Egyptology when they're not Egyptian or they don't have that. And I think going into that and like leaning into it and learning as much as you can and developing yourself in the culture, there is sort of a heritage to that as well. So it doesn't always have to be, because a lot of people work for Celtic. Celtic is all over.

You can find Celtic artifacts from Italy. So it's not necessarily a bloodline, it's more of a culture and where it's spread to. So that's something I just want to say, some people get very gatekeepers about it where it's like, you can either only interact with your own ancestral things or not, or I don't know. It's a weird thing. I like people that put those things in boxes.

Yes. It's not that black and white. It's really not. You can learn about any culture, you can learn about any religion, you can learn about any sort of music or anything like that. I think it's a beautiful thing to open your mind, open your heart, open your ability to understand.

And then when it resonates with you, that's where you start to lean into it and you do more with it. And it gets more powerful, I think is what happens, at least for me. It feels that way. So yeah, it is. It's empowering to be able to take ownership of that and run with that.

So I know we didn't have a whole lot of time. We were recording kind of back to back. So anything interesting happen in the last couple of days since we've seen each other? We were just talking about a customer that came into the Crystal Shop looking for some specific support and some things that she's going through in her life. And then she was asking me about healing her energy centers, her chakras, and was like, can I do it for myself?

Or what do you think? And that is where it goes outside of my role. Right? Yeah. I can suggest crystals that will help support your energy centers.

But when it comes to that deep healing, when you want to go inward and you want to look at where are my blocks and how do I release these blockages, I suggest a healer. So I had suggested Courtney gave her her card. And between Tuesday, two days ago and today, she's already had a session with me. Yeah, it was amazing. And that's what I love about this too is different healers having different modalities and ways that they go about it.

Because I only know a general basic knowledge of crystals. Obviously use them a lot and recommend them and things, but usually have to look it up and find out what there needs to be. I have lists in many capacities for different things like what's recommended for this energy center, what's recommended for this cycle, what's recommended for, depending on the situation, even like physical things that someone's going through, what crystals would they need support with. So I have all these books, these lists, but I have to rely on muscle testing. So for a client, I will do a session and then I will say, okay, I'm going to go through a muscle test and narrow down.

So using the muscles of their body to regulate or to calibrate what is high energy for them and what is low energy. So there's a loss of energy in the muscles. So if you're not familiar with muscle testing, that's basically what it is. But I use my muscles for them, setting the intention that it's for them. And then I go through and I muscle test what do they need.

And I go through my books and I'll go through like page by page. So I may not know what the crystal is, but it'll come up with, this is the crystal you need. And I have never had a situation where it didn't come up and I took a picture of the qualities of it and what it needs, and that it not have something to do with the session we just had. So even though I'm randomly muscle, I'm going through and I'm narrowly going down to what they need, it will usually resonate. But what was interesting about that is this client that came, she came from you, suggested from you, she came the next day, she did a session with me.

I went down and narrowed down because of the cycle we worked on, there was a short list of crystals and on that was, shatter say it for me, shatter height. Okay, I've never heard of that before in my life. I went through my crystal healer book and it wasn't in there. And then I came in this morning to get ready to set up and I saw it caught my eye. I was like, oh, that's beautiful.

Look at that blue. It's so cool. And then I saw the name of it and I was like, that's the one she needed. That I sent her and said, hey, you might want to look at this one or you might look at getting this crystal for yourself. So I just love that.

I love the play of like, you give what she needs in one capacity and I give what she needs in another. It's just beautiful. It is beautiful. So I'm really glad that we got to have that experience with her. I had an interesting session and I don't normally, I mean, I never, confidentiality reasons, I don't say who came to me or what they did, but I'm going to be very general here in this session that I had, but I feel like this is a point that needs to be brought up.

And so I'm going to bring it up. But I had a session, it was a dream interpretation session with a client that I've known. She's come to me for other things. But what was interesting is that she had a particular dream about a friend of hers and she was feeling very worried about the friend. So she brought the friend in to the session because the dream had a lot to do with the friend.

Now, I think what she was expecting from the experience was that something she was worried about her friend. She thought her friend was in danger. She had told this friend many times, I don't like the guy you're dating. I don't, this kind of thing. And I think what she was expecting in our session was for me to validate that her dream meant her friend was in danger and that I should tell the friend that she was in danger and she should break up with this boyfriend.

That's not what I do and that's not what healing is about. I was honoring what she needed and the friend wanted to be a part of the session too. I was welcomed to that. I'm like, if that's what you'd like to do. So we did it with all three of us.

But what I do in dream interpretation sessions, and I've said this before, we have another episode all about dream interpretations, is I don't sit and tell you what your dream means. I do kind of feel like that's unethical for healers to do. I know it makes the healer seem like this amazing psychic and guru and knows everything and can sit there and go, okay, I've heard your dream and now this is what it means. Sure. I'm sure that feeds the ego of some healers, right?

I prefer to be a facilitator of healing. I call myself a healer, but that's not really my role. My role is I'm facilitating the healing work that you're doing. You're more a guide. Right.

I just say healer because that's just a general term that people understand. But as we went through the session, I asked her point by point what each of the images or symbols or things that came up, what they meant to her, what does this mean to you? What does this represent? If you give this one word, what does this mean to you? She did an amazing job.

She went through it and she's kind of awakening her journey in witchy stuff. And she's getting really into the mystical things. So I knew that about her and I said, here are some subconscious connections that things like colors have when I do a healing session with color. I was able to offer that. But essentially what she was doing was interpreting those and what they mean for her.

And I said, so what this message is bringing for you would look like this. We walked through it together and I think she was very upset that it became about her. So that's valid. Wasn't what she was looking for. Wasn't what she was looking for.

So uncomfortable. I think it felt a little shocking. And it was a little different kind of session because essentially what she was saying to her friend was, I need space. I need space from you. I'm just with you and what you're going through with your boyfriend.

I cannot hold space for that. And I think we need to be no contact for a while. But this all came in the session. So I'm like, okay, that's understandable. And let me just preface with nobody did anything wrong.

There's a lot of love here between you two. I can tell you're very close. You're good friends. And actually the friend was amazing. She was like, okay, that's fair.

Yeah, I understand. She goes, I've had friends, really, really good friends I've just needed to take a break. So that became clear. They got to clarify those things. And I think that was really great.

I did receive a message from her that was like, I did not appreciate that. And I know that was uncomfortable for her, but she's very outspoken. She's really good at seeing how she feels and saying exactly what's on her mind. And I know this about her. So I didn't take it personally, but I said, well, I understand healing is uncomfortable.

And if you're going to be in the healing world, if you're going to be a mystic, if you're going to tap into your gifts, I think that everyone should know that there are going to be moments that are uncomfortable. You are going to be confronted with things you maybe didn't want to hear. And this became a session about her fears, her fears around what was going on with her friend and being afraid for her friend. But I understand she didn't know that. How about what's going to go?

Right? I know he's so like, give me a clue on it. We're getting to it, buddy. We're going to get to it in just a second. Smell that.

How's that for you? Does that smell like a fox? What I think is amazing though is like, obviously it's not the way that she wanted it to go, but it ended up going that way. But they were also in a safe space together. And you were able to facilitate a conversation that may have never happened.

Right? So all of these things that were happening in her mind and in her own fears, she was kind of projecting those things onto her friend and saying, well, all of this will be resolved if you just do this. So it was really actually beautiful that she came to you and brought her friend and said, let's work through this. It didn't come out the way that she wanted. So she probably is upset and a little like, why'd you do this?

Unlike how you did this. Yeah. It pokes some of that, the prickly spots inside of us. Yeah. But a lot of us as humans don't want to look inward and say, well, that's on me.

So instead she's like, well, why did you do that? I didn't like that you did that. And it's like, I came to you so that you could tell her what I wanted you to tell her. That's not how it works. And I just said, I stand by my work 100%.

I do feel that what you needed came from your dream. It came from your visions and what you needed to know here. So it's about sitting with that discomfort and then where that needs to go. Now, is her friend in danger or not remains to be seen. Right.

I can't say, but all I did was, this is what your dream is bringing up for you. And this is what you have the opportunity to look at if you want to look at that. So yeah, I wanted to bring that forward because I felt it was important to talk about, especially for people who are in the world of, I want to be a healer and I want to use my gifts to do work with others. I think we've talked about that on episode one, this season is the wounded healer. You have to be willing to also be the wounded one and work on that too.

So it's getting to that space. Hi there. I hope you've been enjoying this episode of Practically Magick and all of the magic that it entails. You know, the opposite of fitting in is belonging. And instead of changing who you are to fit in or to have everyone accept and love the person you've created for them.

Belonging is all about being who you are and people loving you for that person you are. What I love about the Sunshine community is that it allows everybody to be and to offer what it is they have to offer, who they really are. And Sarah has created a wonderful community of women supporting each other in business and just in the community. So the women in business, the partners offer lots of events and lots of special offerings for people who all in our community can benefit from. And so we're going to have a titch of that.

We're going to have a taste of it. Where Sarah's going to talk a little bit about a Sunshine sister and spotlight them and let us know what they are offering in our community. So we're going to take a little moment here to have a Sunshine community So this is Sarah Elberth, the executive director of the Sunshine community. And we are here with Amber today from Land of a Thousand Hills. We are doing a spotlight on Amber because she's one of our Sunshine partners.

Amber, how do you bring Sunshine to our community? Oh gosh, I love that question. Well, I think of bringing Sunshine to the community, it really takes me back to why we bought Land of a Thousand Hills in the first place. And that was because we wanted to become a piece of the community. Me and my husband own this coffee shop, but we want it to be so much more than a coffee shop.

We want to be a place where people bring their family for game night, a place where we can have events like the book club that we have once a month, which was Kate's idea, another Sunshine member. But really, we just want this to be a place where community can come and have their cup of coffee and meet up and just feel like they have a home away from home. Yeah, our friend Courtney and another Sunshine member said that walking into this place after was like walking into your best friend's home. Like it's just so warm and cozy and friendly. Oh, well thank you.

We love it. I want everyone to, you know, be able to come in here and kind of treat it like their living room and enjoy a book, enjoy their favorite cup of coffee, enjoy a glass of wine, meet their friends, enjoy the patio, you know? I just, I want it to be the place away from home. So with that said, let's get into our drum session before Vinny eats them. It's like, can I?

I mean, no, they're rawhide. Basically, they're dog toys. Yeah, they're what they make the dog toys with. So I understand. They tell you not to have their dogs chew because they don't break down.

And yeah, of course. Yeah. Yeah. So we had the opportunity to go to the wellness farm. Cherie, is that how you say it?

Cherie. So I was saying Cherie. That's very French. Yes. She does this really amazing class.

And it's kind of this all day retreat. It's kind of an all day workshop. And I love that she just holds the space. She's at the farm. You're in the, you know, garage part, that's open spaces they have.

And she's just like, you are going to go through this whole process and you can take your time. I'm not going to rush you. And you really felt that. In fact, we got done a little early and I was like, should we leave or should we just hang out for a bit? Yeah.

Yeah. So do you want to start us off? What, what you, maybe even just like how you found the class and wanted to do it because it was you that brought it up. Yeah, it was actually very interesting. I personally have never played a drum before.

I have had drums used on me and healing like from when the healing session with Ricky, with sound baths, things like that. And it's always like, oh cool. I like that. I like the drum. And then all of a sudden I just started getting these ideas and thoughts in my brain.

Like you need a drum. And I was like, I do. And I'm starting to learn that I don't question why, right? Because I'll never know why. Our brain as humans want certainty.

And I didn't know why, but it started coming to me. I talked to you a little bit about it during one of my healing sessions. After you used your drum on me, I was like, I want to make a drum. You're like, I do too. Let's, you know, I'm kind of played with the idea a little bit.

And then I just noticed that drums kept like coming up. And then I was on Facebook and this event came up and it was that weekend for me. Like when I, when I first saw it was like that weekend and so I messaged her and I said, Hey, I would really love to make a drum. Do you have any space available? And took her a little bit to get back to me.

So I started doing some research, found the list of like the heights that were available. And then she came back and said, yes, I have space, but I only have the specific drum available. And I was like, okay. And at that time you had done muscle testing for me and told me what I should eat, what resonated for me. Right.

So I was like, that's not the one that I want. So I guess I'll have to be patient. And yeah. And then we talked about it and we both signed up. Yeah.

I'm glad you waited because it gave me time to sign up and to get like on board with it. Right. Yeah. And actually it worked out beautifully and perfectly because sometimes I try to rush and I get impatient. I'm like, Oh, I want to do it right now.

But this is Buffalo. This is a Buffalo height. And the line that you're seeing here right down the middle is actually the imprint of its spine, which I didn't get to pick this. I picked Buffalo, but then you get whatever height she brings. Yeah.

And as she was describing it before I even saw it, I just was like, I just felt chills all over my body. And I could imagine this big, beautiful animal out in the field with so much power. And I was like, okay, this is going to be a powerful session. This is not just me coming into here to space and creating a drum. This is me having a spiritual experience.

And I've always, always felt so connected to animals, animals, like obviously dogs, cats, but I've always, every time we're out, anytime we're driving through, like doing a road trip, I'm always looking for animals, cows, goats, deer, elk, whatever it is, I'm always like searching for them, rabbits. The connection that, and I think where my hesitation was is dealing with an animal after I had passed. It's always been the living animals that you can look at their beauty and you can appreciate and you can have them in your life and they're alive. So my hesitation was this animal has passed. But what the message that kept coming to me is how can we honor these animals that have passed?

I don't know how the animal passed and I don't think that's very necessary to know, but to know that this animal has passed and that I'm taking a piece of it and I'm honoring it by creating this beautiful drum and then also using the drum for healing. So that's where it was like I was able to step into that space and you witnessed it. As I pulled this hide out and we started with the drying process and the cleansing, the smoke cleansing that they were doing, I was sobbing. I couldn't even stand up straight because I was just like so emotionally overwhelmed with the beauty of the experience. It was, I immediately felt a connection to this animal and then to see this here, the reason why I wanted to create a drum was for protection.

I wanted it to be a deeper sound. I wanted it to be big. I wanted it to provide a protective energy for me. So the fact that it came with the spine just felt like it was that much more protective. Lean into your backbone, lean into your own power and I'm here to also support with that.

Oh my gosh, so all of the synchronicities from building this drum and the way that it all came together and the beauty of the whole experience for me. I went home and I was talking to my husband about it and I was tearing up again and it was just like I was just talking about it and just like reliving all of the emotions that came to the surface is just, yeah, so I'm really excited to learn more about this drum and how to play it, how to use it. Oh yeah, so and I can't say that I have a lot of musical background or experience. When I first took a drumming class and we got our Remo Buffalo synthetic drums with the drumming class that I took, this was years ago when I was first learning Reiki, and it was just a class to help you kind of learn how to drum balancing the chakras and what that would look like and even being able to offer it in a mini session for clients if they just needed kind of a, the way I explain it is it's a little bit more like a drive-through Reiki experience because it's a 30-minute drumming, but it does balance your chakras. It gets you like aligned and you know, feeling good.

It doesn't go as deep, but when I took that class, I was really amazed. She kind of talked about the science behind drumming and she talked about neuroscientists and people who are studying the alpha brainwave states, which is a relaxed, conscious, awake, and aware state of mind, that there are 40% of the population that cannot access that, that they just can't. I mean, they've tried transcendental meditation, which is supposed to be one of the most powerful types of meditation to get there. 40% of the population just cannot access it. They were like, well, what other things can we try with these people?

So they took those 40% and they just started to experiment with them in different ways. They gave them drums and they said just drum for 20 minutes and they gave them a beat to stay with, like a heartbeat kind of beat, but actually the focus groups didn't stick with the beat. Not everybody was good at sticking with the beat. They just kind of drum randomly and they found out it didn't matter. That was the only thing that got them into an alpha brainwave state, which drumming for 20 minutes.

And so the way I was taught from my mentor was she would use it with clients who were kind of going through addictions or cravings. She had a client who she talked about had an addiction to heroin and he was getting sober. He was going through recovery. He was doing really well, but he messaged her or called her and said, I can't, I'm just letting you know and you can't change my mind. Don't talk me out of it.

I'm going to go use again. Like I'm just, I've had it. This is where I'm at. And she said, no problem. I will not talk you out of it.

You're going to do what you're going to do. All I ask is you come over right now. I'll drum you for 20 minutes and then you can go use, you can go do whatever you need to do. And so he did. He came over and she said, I just sat him in a chair in my kitchen and I just drummed over him for 20 minutes.

And he, by the time 20 minutes was done, he said, all that Jones in his video doing its thing. Anyway, they drum for 20 minutes and he was like, the Jonesing is gone. Like the craving I had before. I don't feel it now. And I thought that story was so powerful.

I thought no matter what, and again, it doesn't matter if you're on the beat or not, which is good because the first time I came home, my husband is a drummer. He's a percussionist and I said, I want to practice on you. And so we were going to do a drumming session and I said, just so you know, it doesn't matter if I stick to a beat or not. In fact, I feel like the beat changes depending on what we're doing. And I just followed that intuitively like, oh, it's time to switch it up.

We're doing this now. And so I just go wherever that takes me, which doesn't always sound maybe as musical and pleasant. I don't know. Which isn't necessarily the point. Not the point.

Which is like Camp Rio talks about in Sound Baths, even if you can't hear the bowls, the frequency and the vibration are going to you and affecting you. But anyway, I said, don't judge me while I'm drumming you. And he was like, okay. Because I don't always stick to a beat. So that's important to remember for anyone who's looking to engage with drumming.

But I shout it from the drum. Especially one of those big drums that was an 18 inch. Right? Yeah, I think mine is. Yours is 10.

16 inch. My original one that I use in healing sessions. But the one I made is a 10 inch. Because I was like, I have always wanted to make a drum. But I wasn't sure about the money commitment and like what I wanted.

So I was dipping my toe in. I'm like, I'll just do a small one. I have a bigger one already. Do a small one. Once I went through the experience, I was like, next time.

Yeah, I'm doing a big one. And I'm doing that. I mean, I have all these ideas now. So for sure, I'm going to do it again. But I love even just the little drum and how it's different than the one that I have.

And the patterning on yours is really unique. And I don't know, it's just it's very cool. All came out just exactly what you what was meant for you. And I was going to say as we were each pulling our hides out and that smoke cleansing, how Sheree was playing a drum beat for each of us. Yeah, and it was different for each person.

But even that was like super powerful. Like I could feel the emotions like welling up in me. Just watching like I was second. So I watched the first person go pull her her hide out, cleanse it. And I was like, okay, I'm getting an idea of how to do this.

It didn't go that way for me. It was just like, I just let spirit guide me because I was so overcome with emotion that I don't remember what I did. I really don't. I was just like feeling that emotion. And then I knew, you know, I remember waving it, but I just remember seeing that that line, the spine line through.

Yeah, I was just like, hits you. It's powerful. But yeah, a little jealous, but just like, oh, she's so lucky. Like, I just felt that like, oh, my gosh, look at that spine. Look at that.

It was really amazing. But you know what I loved about that experience? Because I didn't know what to expect. I've heard of like ceremonial drum making classes and that they are spiritual and powerful, but I wasn't sure what what was gonna be like. And when she said, okay, you're gonna come over and you're gonna take hide out of the water, the bag of water that it was in.

And you're gonna dump out the water. And she's like, it's messy. It'll be a little messy and wet. And there were towels and she's like, but birth is messy. And that hit me.

I was like, oh my gosh, we're birthing our drums. I was so, that just changed everything for me because I was like, it's not just a process. I think that's when you go into something like this, you don't know what to expect. And so you're just like, oh, I'm just gonna go and this is gonna be a process. And I'm gonna do this and I'm gonna do that.

And you have an idea. And then you get there and they take all of that. And they're just like, nope, this is, this is what we're doing. And it was, no, it was just beautiful. And then like, everybody sat there holding their hides wrapped in towels, like baby, like little baby.

And I was mentioned before, this was all about protection. I'm like putting so much protective energy into the whole thing, the drum itself to everything that I'm doing. I wrote, I'm protected on the drum. And so it was like, I was holding her in my arms in her towel and just putting the black tourmaline in all different spots. And then they happened to have black tourmaline that I could soak her with after going.

Yeah. So it was, the black tourmaline was a huge thing for me. It's always resonated very, very deeply. When anybody asks me, what kind of stones should I get for protection? I'm like, black tourmaline.

But if it doesn't resonate with you, here's these other options. But it's always like, that's my, that's my go-to. What's your favorite crystal? I get this a lot. I get this a lot.

And it's always black tourmaline. Yeah. But like, it's hard because I love all of them and they all do different things for me. So it's always like, it kind of depends on where it kind of depends on where I'm at and what energy I'm needing. We're going to talk about fluorite today.

Yes. And I love, I don't know if you're ready to transition to this. Well, I will say, I'm glad that you had the tourmaline there because there was a couple of moments I was like, I'm not even in my body right now. And I mean, I know I'm a species and I'm a mystic and I live in this world, but I don't have that happen all the time. Like that's not something that just happens to me, but I could just, I like, I have to say this right now.

I'm not here. I'm over there. I'm over there. I felt like I was so disassociated, not out of stress. I mean, this is what you kind of have to understand about disassociating is like, if you, if that's your avoiding stress and you're avoiding something, then sometimes you're familiar with disassociation as a negative thing.

But I was disassociating in a way that was like, this is so amazing and intense and beautiful. I'm just being here and all that. I don't know. For some reason, I just wasn't in my body. I was like, I'm like over there.

So my interpretation of when that was happening, and we haven't talked about this, but the way that I saw it was you're an artist and you left your body to go be in your comfort zone. You were over there by all of the art supplies. Oh, I didn't even think about that. So like, I thought about that. We didn't talk about it in the moment and we haven't talked about it since, but when you were talking about it, it made sense because she was like behind where we were sitting in like the half circle with all of our hides and things.

And she was like, I'm not here. I'm over there. And she pointed to where they had all of the art supplies set up. So you can paint your drum, you can decorate your drum, all of those things. She had gone over there and I was like, here, take my black tourmaline.

Hold on to it. See if you can recenter it around yourself. If you wanted to. Like it was an offering and she took it and she was able to come back. But I was like- We were about to hit our holes at that point.

And I was like, I need to be here. I need to be paying attention to what's going on and be focused. That makes total sense. Because when I first walked in to the space we were using and she had all the tables set up with all the stuff, she had a table of herbs to soak with your drum. She had some crystals she brought out to, she had all the art supplies for decorating.

And my little artist self was like, just my inner child, right? Is like, look at these paints, look at all these brushes. I'm not too excited about all this. It just like layered up. And so yeah, that makes total sense whether it happened.

And you did say she, when you referred to her drum. So I did want to mention that too, is she taught us that the drum is the female and that the mallet is the male masculine and that it's together the balance and creation of the music and of the beat and that that is the coming together, which is, I mean, that theme comes up in everything. The masculine and the feminine, the dark and the light, the above and the below, but it's where they meet that the magic, the alchemy happens. So that was incredible too. Yeah, it was really incredible.

Because regardless of whether our animals were male and female in their living presence, they are no female energy as the drum. And then we come together with the mallet to create the balanced energy of the male, the feminine. I was, yeah, there were a lot of things that as I think over the experience that I think really just, I wasn't expecting. So they, in the moment kind of floated, but they're starting to like hit now. And I don't know if you feel the call, and I put this on my social media post, if you've ever felt the call and this is something that you want to do, I would recommend this to anybody.

It was a beautiful, spiritual, deeply emotional experience for me that was so beneficial. And now that I have this instrument that I can use, I'm just like so excited to learn and use it. And even if I just use it on myself or my family or my animals, absolutely, it's there. It'll become your best friend. Like my first drum, and I realize making a drum is a totally different experience.

My original drum is synthetic buffalo. It's a Remo. So I know that seems like it's not special, but I have bonded with my drums so thoroughly. And what we talked about doing next is there's a certain meditation that we can do that I can facilitate for Jaime that we're going to meet the spirit of the drum so that when you use or engage with your drum, you call that spirit each time, you invite it to be there with you, and you get such a personal relationship. And I didn't think this was possible.

When I started all this, I thought, I wonder if, but I don't know. But now I've been with my drum and I've used my drum on so many countless sessions with clients and took it to Stonehenge. I didn't have much room in my suitcase, but my pajamas lived in my drum so that I could bring it. So when I went to England, I could take it with me to Stonehenge. And I drummed it in the center of the circle, inside the center.

It was incredible. But I just said to my drum, take all you can from this and bring it back home because I need this. My clients need this. And I bought Bluestone while I was there. That's part of the Stonehenge.

So it became a part of my drum story. But I never thought it was possible. And when I do drumming, you'll start to realize this. You start to hear the tones change and you can tell what they mean. It's like your drum talks to you.

So when I'm drumming people, I will hear a nice, beautiful tone when their chakras are open, when it's flowing. When I get to a point where there's a block, I almost hear like a dung. It's a different sound. And I don't know if anyone else can hear it. I that relationship with my drum and being like, oh, they have a block there.

We need to work through that. And even just connecting with my drum telling me what is that block about? What does this client need to release? What do we need to work through here? So that's all part of it.

And yeah, it's just powerful. So you've got nothing else from this. Get a drum. Yeah. And one form or another.

Yeah, it just feels, it already feels like it's making a difference in my life. So I'm just really excited to continue my journey and learning and growing and using it. So yeah, you'll take it everywhere with you. You'll be like, oh, there's a drum circle. Oh, great.

Here we go. I know. I want to go to my first drum circle next week. And you may start bringing it to places that you didn't think you would bring a drum. I do this.

And I'll be like, yeah, what, just in case, just in case we need to cleanse the space or set the scene or open the space or close the space. Drumming is great for any ritual that you're, you know, what intention you have for it. So if I know people are going to be singing or chanting of any kind, I'm like, got my drum. Just in case you want that to back it up. I brought it to Nourishing Kin.

Nobody's asked me to. The Nourishing Kin is a nonprofit that I do that we celebrate the Wheel of the Year together. We have certain songs that we sing together and that go with the Wheel of the Year, whatever the festival or what we're celebrating. And I bring it with me there and I'll be like, oh, we're singing. Do you guys mind if I drum while we do that?

I think they appreciate it. But anyway, I also have, I'll show you my ocean drum. Yeah. And they have the option to make an ocean drum there too. No, we don't have to do that.

It's just like, it's okay. It does, it makes a beautiful sound. It does the job. Yeah. But I'll be honest, I feel like there's something outside eight.

Okay. But I love that the ones that they make there have copper beads. I was like, okay. So I've already got like two drums already in my brain. So what I was going to say when we were talking about my hide, it's originally, I was thinking about dying it black because as I said, protection, protection, protection.

So I was thinking I wanted it dyed black, but there was a reason why I didn't. And the reason was because the hide that was meant for me has this beautiful spine print on it. So I will at one point make a black drum because I feel it. I feel it's clear for me, but this one was meant to be the way it is. So yeah.

I learned I need to bite the bullet and just paint my drum. The one that I have, because she's like, it's synthetic. You can paint whatever you want. I won't change a thing. And I was like, Oh, good to know.

What have I been afraid of all this time? I'm like, I will eventually paint something on my drum. I just don't know what and I don't know how, and I don't want to ruin it. When she said, no, go right ahead. It won't, it won't matter.

And I'm like, no, no. What am I going to paint? Now I got to figure out what what has been meant for that drum this whole time and what image is going to go there. Because once it's there, it's there. That's why I'm a little nervous.

Oh, and we made our mallets too. I kind of almost like this. Yeah. She had just like a bunch of sticks laid out and you could go through and pick them. And I walked over and this one, like, it's got like this little handle on it.

Now I love that curve in it. I think that would be so nice to hold, especially for a big drum. So it has to kind of match the size of your drum so that it can reach in the center. And I didn't ask them what this for is, but it's real. Yeah.

So I'm like, I don't know. But again, honoring honoring the animal, I think it might be rabbit. What it's what it feels like. I don't know. I'm not sure.

But honoring the animal that has passed and giving them purpose. At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to put fur on mine, but I wanted to give this piece this. I think that's amazing. I love that it like decorates the stick. I put mine right on the head.

I didn't have a whole lot of room and I didn't want to cover up the little stones that are on the mallet. Yeah, my little stones are black. I'm pretty sure those are obsidian. Perfect. So with that, we can go to all day and all night.

All right. Yes. This Crystal of the Week. I brought mine that I bought years ago. But I was going to say it's interesting as I'm looking up the qualities of fluorite.

And again, we're kind of talking about mindfulness and meditation for this month. It's the theme. But I bought it. This is interesting because at the time, I don't remember if it was a person that worked at that told me this. I don't know where I got this, but I got this because someone said it's for family relationships, that it's good for reconnecting or things like that.

And my oldest son and I then and now have always had this sort of relationship that propels you into healing. You don't have a choice, but to look at everything about yourself and question everything. So I love him for that, but it is challenging. And so I think I bought it with that in mind at the time. I was like, oh, I'm going to keep this around a minute and I'm going to need that.

And maybe this will help support what I'm trying to do, which is reconnect, repair some connection and attachment with my son. But now doing the research, it's really a lot to do with the calm mindfulness and meditation. So what's your take on the fluorite? So for me, fluorite is all about focus. It focuses the mind.

So anytime I have someone come in and talk to me and say, hey, what do you recommend? I have a child going back to school or whatever. They have ADHD and they have a hard time focusing. Right. So, and it's not just for that, right.

It's kind of a broad thing to talk about, but I like to have a close spy anywhere I'm working. Like when I was working a nine to five job, I had fluorite all the way around my computer because it's a good focus tool. It's also when my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD, I created a bracelet for her with fluorite. So fluorite, yeah, that's the first thing that comes to my mind when you talk about fluorite. Fluorite comes in so many different sizes, shapes, colors, natural, polished.

Let me show this one. This one's different. Yeah, that one is a yellow fluorite. So wherever it is that you want to focus your healing, this one would be great to use for the solar plexus. It's a very muted yellow.

It's not like that bright, bright yellow that you think a lot of the solar plexus is for, but it's also got purple through it. So for me, it brings together that third eye and the solar plexus. And when I was healing my solar plexus, I realized that my inner child was actually blocking my third eye. Oh yeah. So it was like, it was a tandem thing.

I was working on both energy centers at the same time. So color, but in general, fluorite is connected to your third eye. Opening that energy center, opening and seeing what you're capable of, what's there for you. That makes so much sense. And now, I mean, now that I connect that, my son has ADHD.

And a lot of maybe the issues that brings up in me is the struggle I have with that. How to parent him? What does he need? And how do I address that in his way? That's always been a real struggle for me.

So it's interesting. I don't know if that was a real thing where it's like, yeah, fluorite is for family connections, or that was just for me. Right. Right. And so now that you say that, I'm like, well, that makes perfect sense.

I should have been putting this around him. That's what I was actually hearing. The message was maybe that piece was actually meant for him. But it's also, you can use it for yourself to help calm and focus where your energy is going. Because if you're dealing with a child who is challenging you, it can be hard to stay calm.

It can be hard to stay focused on what really matters. So I don't know, like maybe not that piece specifically, but fluorite would definitely benefit your child. I think a lot of people just love fluorite because it's so vibrant, so beautiful. And it's the banding that you see through it and the different colors that come together. But this piece that you're holding is fluorite from Pakistan.

It's a natural, so this wasn't cut, this wasn't polished, this wasn't, nothing was added to it. It just naturally grows in that shape and it's got beautiful geometric natural patterning on it. It's amazing. But yeah, it comes from all different places all over the world, all different colors. Some of them will have UV reaction under a black light.

So it'll be one color in the natural light and then it'll be a different color under the black light, which is fun. And I like to say it's its hidden power or hidden beauty, which a lot of times when you're on the surface level of healing, sometimes it helps to kind of go deep and say, oh, there is, there's light in there. Let's shine the light on it. Let's bring that beauty out too. So multifaceted crystal that we're talking about.

Yeah, that it's like rainbow. Well, some of them are more rainbow. You're going to get a lot of connections, a lot of different aspects. Yeah. Fantastic.
