Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame: Hammerin’ Hank’s Legacy

Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame: Hammerin' Hank's Legacy

Ryan Hoppe & Hammerin' Hank · August 17, 2026

In This Episode

Hammerin' Hank just got voted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame, and this episode captures the raw energy of a legend reflecting on what that honor means. Hank and Ryan dig into the influence The Doghouse had on shows across the country, from Portland to Florida, and what it feels like to be recognized alongside the biggest names in West Coast radio history.

But the real meat of this episode lives in the unfiltered war stories. Hank breaks down a 1998 moment from The Doghouse production studio that perfectly captures the chaos of '90s shock jock radio. Ryan counters with his own story from 102.5 The Bone, and the two trade tales about what actually happened behind the microphone back when radio had no guardrails. These aren't sanitized nostalgia, they're the specific, awkward, completely unrepeatable moments that defined an era.

The episode also covers the Giants game against Colorado, pop culture trivia (Demi Lovato, Avicii, Arsenio Hall), a full comedy block, and Hank's take on the Copa America and LeBron's free agency. There's church talk, a Prick of the Week callout for the doubters who said he wouldn't last six months in radio, and a Buddy of the Week shout-out to everyone who voted him into the Hall of Fame.

What's up Hammerin' Hank? If I hit the button, would you be ready to begin the show? Yeah. Alright, let me press this. You're listening to the Hammerin' Hank Show with Henry Ochs and Ryan Hoppe.

What's up Hammerin' Hank? How are you? Pretty good. Good. I have met a lot of people on radio.

I've hung out with a few radio hall effects. I've never done a podcast with a Hall of Famer. Hank, you made the Hall of Fame. Tell us about it. Well, the podcast got voted into the big area radio Hall of Fame last week.

How excited were you when you heard the news? Really excited buddy. What does it mean to you that you were on one of the biggest shows ever on the west coast and in radio in general? It influenced shows like the Playhouse out in Portland to do the thing. You got Flying Brian in Florida that was influenced by it.

You guys were influential. And now you're in the radio Hall of Fame. Thank you buddy. On a scale of one to ten, how excited are you? Eleven.

I love it. Hammerin' Hank, I'm having a pretty good week. We're hanging out. Hammerin' Hank, what else have you been up to this? Oh, wait.

We're attending the San Francisco Dryas baseball game tomorrow. What is that going to be like? Who are they playing? The Colorado Rockies. That team sucks.

They definitely suck. They've sucked since 2007 when they could not win. What was it? A World Series or whatever against the Red Sox? Hammerin' Hank, Hammerin' Hank, I want to ask you, how hot is it right now in the Bay Area weather wise?

It's a little nippy. I love that word. It's adorable. In Florida, it was a hundred degrees in my car. I was sweating balls, dude.

It sucks. Do you not like the hot weather? I hate hot weather. Then you would never want to be my roommate. Actually, I keep my apartment pretty cold.

The electric bill screws me every month, but it's worth it. It's 95 degrees outside right now in Florida. That sucks. Yeah, but it's better than the Midwest. Hammerin' Hank, I want to ask you, have you ever heard of the radio show Lex and Terry?

Florida. They're out of Florida. They were on the iHeart radio app when it first came out. I heard them in high school. And I'm driving to good old Jacksonville tomorrow, which is like driving from LA to, let's say, San Francisco.

It's about four hours. Don't know why I had a hard time saying that. And I'm going to be hanging out with them. I'm going to tell everybody out there about the Hammerin' Hank show. Mm-hmm.

All right, Hank, every week we begin with a memory of my time. And your time on the radio. My favorite memory was when I won a boxing match in 2016 against the rival, Jake Heron. It was in front of a sold out crowd. It was great.

Did you ever partake in any boxing matches for Shock Jocks? Nope. You sang though at the Battle of the Bay, right? Yeah, I sang the National Anthem at the 2005 Wild 94.9 Battle of the Big Boys. It's funny how I occasionally worked for Wild 94.1, the bass party station.

And you worked for Wild 94.9, the bass party station. Mm-hmm. Now that the number one hit music stations. Oh, well, I'm not sure if they're number one. Hammerin' Hank, what is your radio memory of the week?

You know, back in 1998, the Doghouse had a female in the production studio. Yeah. I tried to get it on, but unfortunately I didn't. You tried to have sex with her? Yep.

That is so 1998 radio. Now, when you were trying to have sex with her, were they telling you what to do? Nope. You were just. I was too nervous because there were too many people in the studio.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I really need to dissect this right now. Mm-hmm. Jimmy, you didn't get dissected. Hank, so how did it go down?

Were you just like, hey, I want to be. How did the situation go down? Break it down for us. The producer set it up. So the producers.

Oh, yeah. So the producers told you to go. Did you ask the girl if she wanted to have sex or what? No. What did you do?

You just wanted to ask her if she wanted to have sex with Hammerin' Hank. Nope. Tell us. Break it down. They set it up.

So what was set up? I'm a little confused. I had to have sex in the auxiliary production studio. So I can't get it up, but I didn't because there are too many people in the other studio. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

So let me let me hear me out. Hank, I'm trying to break this down. So they so like, were you naked? I was wearing clothes. OK.

But you said trying to get it up. Did you pull down your pants? What was happening? I put down my pants. Yep.

And did the was the girl cool with this or was this kind of a thing? It was D-U-S-C-O-O-L. Did she try to do stuff to you or was this one sided? That was one timer. No, no, no, no, no.

Was she cool with the bed or was she like kind of mad? He was cool. Did anything happen? You get any kisses, any mouth hugs? OK, hugs.

That's it. So you got a hug. A mouth hug is my term for a blowjob. So you didn't get a blowjob. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

What happened in the room? Did you get a did did she give you oral sex? Yes, I did try, but I didn't do it. Why couldn't you do it? Yes, there are too many people in the studio.

OK. Did she place her mouth on your junk? Yep. And you just couldn't do it because you were nervous? Way too nervous.

But you still were able to have a woman put her mouth on your lower regions, even though you couldn't climax. Right. You're a freaking legend, Hank. Now, how did it feel when her mouth is on your junk? It always feels good unless there's teeth.

Pretty good. Pretty good. She could have been better. Was she pretty good? I've been better.

Sure she loves hearing that. Was HR involved? Nope. That is so 1990s, man. That could not fly now.

That could not fly today. You want to hear my story? Yeah. So I was working at 102.5 The Bone on the Roger and JP show. And they wanted to know for some reason how big my penis was.

So they had me a masturbate in the corner. And I had the same problem you did, Hank, where I got nervous. And even though I was nervous and couldn't get it up, there was this rich girl that drove right across the bridge to come shake her ass in front of me. And I still, even though I was not that hard, I still was bigger than the average penis. Just brag.

Hank, we share very similar war stories. I worked for Rovers Morning Glory, Steve Dahl, 102.5 The Bone, MJ's kind of more family friendly. But I'm saying I've worked around all these shock jocks. Isn't it kind of unbelievable to think about what used to happen back in the day? It's unbelievable.

Did the girl, how long did the girl go down on you? About. It possibly 15 minutes. Wait, wait, wait, wait. You got a 15 minute mouth hug, aka a BJ?

Yep. Hank, that's why you're in the Radio Hall of Fame, dude. You're a legend. I'm astonished by this. Did she, if now, if you would have been able to get to attention.

Mm hmm. Would you have had intercourse with her? I would have, yep. But you just couldn't get it up. Yes, I was too nervous.

Either way, Hank, you're one in a situation. Although it's always kind of sad when you're trying to like, you know, get it up in your night and then the girls always take offense to it. Sometimes I'm like, it's just a whiskey. Don't hate on me. Right.

This has been a very extended segment. Oh, geez. About blow jobs. And I've had a fun time doing it. We're going to move on.

Hank, did you have the jokes I sent you? Yes, I got it right here right now. Let me hit the music. Hank's joke hitting like a thumpers through the trunk. Punch lines cracking like a dedicated cat.

No punk Ryan hobby, Ryan shotgun with oak. Dropping these last crew never going broke. This a hammering Hank show, keeping it raw. Jokes sharper than a blade, cutting through the saw. Every segment fire, humor like a burn.

Tune in for the laughs. Watch the tables turn. Hey, Joker, today got us rolling on the floor. Comedy go from the top to the core. Alright, Hank!

What do you have for the jokes? Each and every day. Why do I always lick busy when my boss talks? Why? Because staring into space.

Staring into space is a great career move. Sounds like you're getting a blowjob right now. Why do I keep buying we used to go grocery bags? Why? Because the key for candy we used to go grocery bags all the time.

Are you drunk right now? Probably because there's too many mice in the house. Ew, I didn't even know that. Why do I read the menu three times? Because I have to pretend I'm not ordering the burger.

Oh, geez. Why do I check my pockets every time I leave the house? Why? Because one mizzen can ruin the whole day. Mm-hmm.

Why do I always wait until my gas tank is almost empty? Why? Because I like my road crisp to be... to feel... adventurous.

Why do I always hit the elevator button twice? Because apparently I didn't get a response to enthusiasm. Why do I put my sunglasses on top of my head? So I can spend the next ten minutes looking for them. Why do I always say I'm not hungry before I look at the menu?

Because the best around sticks haven't introduced themselves yet. Why do I keep my old t-shirt on? Why? Because one day it's magically going to become a yard work shirt. Why do I smile like a dog?

Because dogs ignore people. Why? Because dogs have a much better track record. Mm-hmm. That's it for the jokes for this week.

Hammerin' Hank, I gotta go back real quick. We gotta come back to it. Now, when you were getting that PJ on the radio, was it live on air? It was live on the air, yep. What did your family think of that?

They didn't like it at all. Heaven forbid you get a little bit of oral pleasure. I think it's not that big of a deal. I'm astonished by it. Did you have any other memories similar to that?

I'm just astonished. I'm in awe. Anything else? This week. Okay.

I'm kind of living in the past. That was such a good segment. All right, Hammerin' Hank, I'm going to hit the music and then we'll do pop culture trivia. Okay? Yes.

Let me do it. All right. I know. Yeah, we bring in the heat. Get your knowledge up.

Take a seat. Oh yeah, what up Hank? It's fleets. Hammerin' Hank never miss a beat. Hank!

MJ's moonwalk to Elton Square. What do you got for pop culture trivia this week? We have the top ten Hank record neon lights back in 2014. Come on, I got this. Avicii.

Jamie Lovato. I thought it was... I'm thinking of Blinding Light. I don't know. Next, anything else?

Radisson, really don't care, back in 2014. Lord? Nope. Jamie Lovato. I should have guessed that.

Have you been spanking it to her lately? Nope. Oh geez. Who have you been spanking it to lately? To be in camera Britney Spears.

Hell yeah! I love it. You're the man. All right, Hammerin' Hank. Let's see.

Any other ones? That's it for this week. What is a late night talk show you'd love to see make a comeback? The Arsenio Hall Show. It did come back in 2013 and it failed.

There are big times. But I'd like to see it make a comeback though. I think you should do a podcast or like a pay for play kind of thing. It should be on Netflix or something. Hammerin' Hank here and also says, let me load up the music.

What do you think? I'm playing right now. Music. Church music. How the hell has church been?

You getting blow jobs there? Nope. Extremely good. How's it been at church? We're still studying the book of 1 Peter.

Oh yeah! How'd that go? Pretty good. That's good dude. What are you learning?

Attaching onto massive relationships and stuff. That's good. I should go to church and mess up all my relationships. How's church been? Anything else there?

Extremely good. Anything else you've been working on at church? What have you been praying about? God. Okay.

That's like saying what have you been working on for basketball? Shooting hoops. No, but specifically, what have you been praying about? Praying about the future. Ah, geez.

We all do. I hope it gets better. Probably not. If you want to leave us a voicemail, 856-494-6773. You can hit me up on Instagram at DJ Hammerin' Hank.

We got a comment here. Hammerin' Hank, I'm so proud of you for making it into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. You're one of the GOATS! So there's a comment there. Hank, you can't hear it, but I'm playing music that sounds like soccer.

What is your take on the Real Cup? Green, because Mexico's out of it. US is out of it. So, are you rooting for Mexico or no? I was rooting for Mexico.

They got good food. I was sad America lost, but we always do. Sex. Any other little things about the Real Cup or is that the analysis for this week? The analysis for this week.

Alright, Hank, it says here you want to talk about LeBron. James! What's going on there? He hasn't made a decision what team he will be playing for. Next season.

No, in our luck, right when we're done with the show, he'll announce it. Do you want him on the Warriors? I particularly don't. I don't either, because they would jack up ticket prices. Any other reason you don't want LeBron?

That's just about it. Hammerin' Hank, if I hit the music, would you be ready for Prick of the Week? Yep. Let me hit it. Turn it up in the club.

Let's go. Alright, Hank! Who's your Prick of the Week? All those who didn't believe in me when I first started my radio career. They're losers!

Who cares, Hank? My cricks. They can kiss my ass and I'll fart in their face. Who cares? They're losers!

My cricks predated that I would last less than six months when I first started at Wild. Then it was Wild around seven back in 1996. I lasted over 14 years. You're the goat, Hank! You know that, right?

Yep. Can you believe this is episode 59? Oh, buddy. If I hit the music, would you be ready for a buddy of the week? Have some positivity.
