iHeart Radio Layoffs: Why Radio Lost Its Soul
iHeart Radio Layoffs: Why Radio Lost Its Soul
In This Episode
Radio is broken, and Hammerin' Hank isn't holding back. This episode opens with the elephant in the room: iHeart's massive layoffs that just claimed some of his closest radio buddies, including the Morning Madhouse crew from K.D.O.N. in Salinas after over 20 years on air. Ryan and Hank dissect what went wrong, corporate automation replacing live, local personalities with executives reading app promotions. The result? Radio listeners are abandoning ship, and iHeart keeps wondering why they're irrelevant.
But the show doesn't stay dark. Hank pivots to radio memories that actually matter: his first time at the Sound Factory on his birthday in 1996, meeting friends who shaped his life. He shares the autism PSA that earned a Kansas Association of Broadcasters nomination, a moment of genuine pride that cuts through the industry cynicism. Then there's his solo trip to the San Francisco Giants game via BART and Muni, proof that someone with autism can navigate the world independently.
The energy shifts again with rapid-fire jokes, music trivia (Dolly Parton, The Tony Rich Project), and church updates. Hank's buddy shout-out goes to the San Jose Giants organization for inviting him to sing the national anthem. His prick of the week? Bob Eapman and iHeart's leadership, though even Hank roots for the employed to stay that way.

Alright Hammerin' Hank, if I hit the button right here, would you be ready to begin episode 58 or 59? Whichever one. Yes buddy! Let me hit the button. You're listening to the Hammerin' Hank Show with Henry Ochs and Ryan Hoppe.
What up Hank! How are you? You're good? Yes! How you been?
What you been up to? What's been going on in the world of Hammerin' Hank? A lot of my regular radio buddies just got laid off. Yeah, let's start with the elf in the room. Hammerin' Hank, you've been in radio about 40 years.
You've been around the block. What is your take on what I Heart did by laying people off? It really really really sucked. What sucked about it, Sgt? My buddy Sandy Diggity and Shubbiz, they just got laid off from K.D.O.N.
and Salinas. Was that the Morning Madhouse? Yes. Oh my god. I mean they could have had a better name because Mankow had a first name.
They were doing the Morning Madhouse for over 20 years. Yeah, and I Heart's always wondering why they are just so irrelevant and then they lay people off. Oh, and I'm sure they're going to put the Breakfast Club in the morning. Woo! Jesus Christ, Hank.
I never play shows live and local. Are any of the shows live and local on that market anymore? Nope. Guddy, goody gumdrops. Hey, but at least Bobby Mint gets his money.
Douche. Hammerin' Hank, I never want to hear anybody ever go, oh, he created MTV. It wasn't just him. It was other people. But they always go, oh, he created MTV.
And look what MTV is now. It sucks. This is fucking garbage. Hammerin' Hank, I used to be a defender of radio. I still work in radio.
You work in radio. We love radio. We grew up as radio nerds. But I'm starting to, it's like I'm in a business relationship with radio. Beforehand, I loved it.
It was like having that hot ass girlfriend. But now I'm like, you know what? It's all good. It's not really all good. Hammerin' Hank, they let go of Kid Chris, who is a shock jock out of Cincinnati on WEBN, one of my friends.
And that broke my heart. It did too. I mean, you look at it. But he's a bass-signing Grammister, one eight four nine. Yeah, thank God.
Gramm's employed. I know. But the thing is, people wonder, why don't people listen to radio? Because you get the term as parasocial. You get a parasocial relationship with the radio host.
You think they're your friend. And all of a sudden you let go of them without any goodbye shows. They got rid of Flyin' Brian over in Four Myers. He's been there since 01. And then I heart's like, dude, you know what's the funniest thing they're doing, Hank?
They're having executives, like some of the like head of social media, do on air breaks. So in Tampa on the throwback hip hop station, which is like the same four songs, it's always on time by Ja Rule. It's Lose Yourself by Eminem. It's very predictable. What's Your Fantasy by Ludacris is the same four throwbacks.
But Hank, beforehand you would have a DJ be like, yo, what's up? This is DJ Twisted or whatever. And check out the iHeartRadio app. It's really cool. Blah, blah, blah.
Because every talk break is about the iHeart app. And now you have these corporate nerds going, well, if you check out the iHeartRadio app, there is a bunch of them. It sucks. My iHeartRadio app. Because I listen to my Hanky's favorite songs on there.
What is your music on iHeart? What is the music with iHeart? What do you listen to on there? I listen to Fox Sports Radio. Seth Hestel is the one for nine.
Seth Hestel is the Z100 New York. Do you like Kovino and Rich? Those are my homies. Yep. They're funny, dude.
They're good guys. Hammerin' Hank. Let's talk positively about radio. Do me a favor. What is your radio memory of the week?
My radio memory of the week? Is when the first time I watched it was at Sound Factory on my birthday back in 1996. Was that when you got a blood jump? Nope. Was that the second time you came home?
Hammerin' Hank, what was it like on your birthday at the Sound Factory? It was very, very, very good. And I predicted that 1997 would be a good year. As it turned out, 1997 was a great year. What was so good about it other than preschool?
I met my buddies Veronica and Julie. Jose from Oakland. Monica from Union City. That's good. Those are good memories that you will cherish forever.
Good for you, Hank. Hank. Breaking news. What's breaking news? LeBron James could be head to the Warriors.
Wait, wait, wait. Is this like breaking news like right now or is this speculation? We need speculation. You got me nervous. I don't want them to do it.
I don't want them on the Warriors. I watch the Warriors. I don't want them on the Warriors because they'll fucking jack up ticket prices. And also, he's a douchebag. And he's a crybaby.
I like my team with Kerry Bonham. I don't need him there. No, it does. But of course, he's a bandwagon jumper like a woman. All he does is he goes from team to team.
He's a douche. And you know what's- LeBron James is a crybaby. You know what was genius that he did? Was he waited until his son got a guaranteed contract and then left the Lakers. So he stuck them with that nipple baby douche.
That was very smart. He made sure his son got paid. Oh, yeah. Hammer and egg. Yes.
Any other radio memories? Yes. What? Doghouse. What?
First time I walked into old school 1079 with my dad and my sister's refet. We did an autism PSA. Yeah. How did that go? We loved it.
It was nominated for best PSA by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Hammerin' Hank. Although I didn't win, but I'm so happy with the nomination. You're a bridesmaid, which are usually hotter than the life. Hammerin' Hank, I'm going to play your PSA.
Is it the one from 2016 or 2019? I do have a 2019. I'll play it right now. Hello again. It's your favorite San Francisco DJ hammering.
I mean, like normal. But the truth is, I have a condition on the autism. That's right. It's in condition, not disease. That is autism contract anyone regardless of who they are.
People with autism normally have difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication skills. Social interactions and leisure activities. In a recent study, people with autism are less likely to have a job and more likely to become homeless. I beat the odds by having 11 friends and family, having a college education. I have even worked in the San Francisco Bay area as an honorary personality for many years.
Always remember that people with autism want the same things as you to be happy and successful. To find out more about autism, please contact your local mental health center or visit autism speech. Our morning and I appreciate you. Yeah, welcome back to the show. We're all hanging out.
You make very good PSA's by the way. How is your recent? How is your recent visit to the San Francisco Giants game? Pretty good. What'd you do?
I saw a baseball game. I know that interactive. Some people just lost to the homeless. They signed a six. I love what you say.
Homeless is a her and Hank. Did you get recognized? Not really. Oh, man. You got to go out there wearing a shirt.
It says like hammer and Hanks the man. Suck my neck. You know, that would definitely help your cause. I know. Who did you go to the game with?
Myself by yourself. Yes. Wow. That's awesome. See, you are an example of someone with autism who is still able to go out and about.
You took the bus, right? Yes. I took Bart and the Muni. I love taking a bite, especially when it goes by the was it. Girardelli chocolate.
I love that place. Anywho, have an egg. Yes. Who are some old school artists you'd love to meet? I got knocked off.
No, you're here. I can hear you. Can you hear me? You can hear you. You can hear me?
Yes. You didn't get knocked off. You're just tripping balls on weed or whatever. I'm just kidding. Hammerin' Hank, let's keep moving on and do this.
What are some old school artists you'd love to meet? Good timing. Elton John. Also, Madonna. That's awesome.
We got some comments here. Hammerin' Hank, I have been a fan of you since when you sang the National Anthem last year. I had not heard of you prior, but now I love the show. Keep up the good work. So we got to listen to her messages there.
Hammerin' Hank, if I had the music, because I need to laugh right now, laugh and romance and do whatever. If I had the music right now, would you be ready for jokes? Yes. Let me hit the music. Alright.
I know. Hank, what are your jokes? Why do I always wait until my phone is at 1% to charge it? Why? Because I like living on the edge.
Why do I keep saying I'll be there in five minutes? Why? Because I'm still in the shower. Sounds less professional. Why do I love self-checkout?
Because it's the only job where nobody complains about my work. Why do I always hit remind me tomorrow? Why? Because tomorrow has a much better attitude than today. Oh, geez.
Why do I always check the weather five times a day? Why? Because maybe this time it'll say 72 and 70. It's that in Florida, but plus 18. Why do I always lose the TV remote?
Why? Because apparently it enjoys taking little vacations. Why do I always wave at people even when I'm not sure it's them? Why? Because embarrassment only lasts a few seconds.
Why do I keep opening the same app over and over? Why? Because maybe the same sudden interesting happened. Why do I always save leftovers? Why?
Because future me deserves a little surprise. And finally, why did I tell myself one more snack? Why? Because the first four didn't seem convincing enough. And that's it for the jokes.
Good job, Hank. Thank you, Hank. If I hit the music, would you be ready for a music trivia? Yes. One second.
Right here. Turn on the show with Henry and Ryan. Pop trivia questions, yeah, no lying. Got my mind sharp like a blade that's flying. They asking those questions, got my brain frying.
Hammer and Hanks got the mic up high. Pop hits playing to the end of the sky. Gotta keep it real, can't let it slide. Answers in my head, can't let them hide. Pop trivia, yeah, we bringing the hits.
What do you got? Who had a top ten country crossover hit behind closed doors way back in 1974? Oh, Jesus Christ. I was like, not even my parents had any of that. I don't know.
Dolly Parton. Which? I don't know. There we go. Who has a top ten R&B hit record nobody knows way back in the late 90s?
Give me a second. Genuine. You're close. The Tony Rich Project. I would have never got that, but I'm appreciate you saying I'm close.
Any other ones? That's it for this week. Hank, do you know what I'm playing right now? Yes. What am I playing?
Dutch music. Hell yeah. Can you hear it on your end? Nope. You just have that chemistry with me.
You know what I'm doing. What's going on in church? Dr. Josh, you're turning in for a brief time this Sunday. We're continuing the book of 1 Peter.
How's that going? Pretty good. What are you learning about with Jesus? To become a better person. I think you're good enough doing it already.
And also, Pastor John is leaving that in this month for surgery. I hope he feels better. Anything else going on in church? That's it. Hank, play it the music.
Are you ready for a buddy on the wake? Yes. Let's go. Hank, Henry Ochs on the mic. Hop, ride and shotgun.
Roll call for the buddies. We just having some fun. Alright Hank, who's your buddy on the wake? Definitely Miguel and also everyone in the San Jose Giants organization for inviting me to see the national anthem on the 21st of this month at the Exciteballpark in San Jose. When did you get invited?
How many days ago? About a month ago. Good. You got so much happening. It's hard to keep track, but good job Hank.
Thank you buddy. Any other buddies? That's it. Are you ready for pricking the news? Yes.
Let's go. Right now as I turn up the music. I'm going to clean all the masterminds of the iHeart media for laying off a lot of my buddies after years and years of experience. That would be Bob Eapman, the douchebag. He's my prick of the week.
There you go. Anything else on your mind Hank? Well I gotta say what's up to all my buddies at Juani for 9 for so having a job. Yeah shout out. As much crap talking as I do about the douche.
I've told you I don't want anybody to be unimplied. You can be the biggest douche ever and I'm rooting for you. So if you're still employed you gotta be freaking out a little bit. Hank, is there anything else? I wanted to talk about the 60s TV shows.
I forgot about that. What's happening with shows from almost 70 years ago? I used to watch the Flintstones, the Jetsons. I love the Jetsons. It's better.
And also the teen show combat which is a wartime drama. Hey guy what's better Flintstones or Jetsons? Why the Flintstones? We have a disagreement and that's because we are friends. I prefer the Jetsons.
My favorite Jetsons catcher is Mr. Spacely. I think his wife's a hot ass mouth. Okay. Yeah.
Anyway. Anything else Hank? Yes you do it. Alright let me hit the music. Alright here.
One second. One second. Let me do this right here. Before we sign off Hank, because we always sign off so fast. Can you believe we've done 68 shows?
I mean 58. Yes. It's crazy. It's flying by. We're busy and that's what it comes.
Oh yeah. That was in hell yeah. Something like that. If we live that long we do it once a week. Uh, Hammerin' Hank.
Any final thoughts? Never give up. Always stay focused on your goals. And maybe Sunday your dreams will come true. And I'll talk to you next week.
Peace in your hood. Bye Hank. Peace in your head buddy. Bye buddy I love you. I love you too.
Oh that's cute. He finally said he loved me. He always dances around it. But he said it. I don't need the approval of women.
I got it from Hank. That made my day. Bye. Autistic mind sharper than a bone-chilling shackle. Henry Oates with the hops Ryan Hopped in the spot.
Radio waves hitting hard like a chef with a pot. Farewell Hammerin' Hank gotta close up the show. Legend in the booth where the vibes used to flow. Autism warrior always running the glow. But all good things gotta let the curtain go slow.
All the dial spitting truth with his unique grind. Thoughts intertwined like graffiti on the line. Ryan on the mic Henry's rhythm divine. They the blueprint. Every beat they design.
Static in the speakers where the laughter used to ride. Hank led the show with that beautiful pride. Autism didn't stop him, nod, amplified. Hammerin' Hank forever immortalized. Farewell Hammerin' Hank gotta close up the show.
