KCRH Radio Show, Doghouse Memories & Autism Awareness
KCRH Radio Show, Doghouse Memories & Autism Awareness
In This Episode
Hammerin' Hank and Ryan Hoppe are back with radio nostalgia, unfiltered comedy, and real talk about what it takes to survive in broadcasting. This episode pulls from the golden era of Bay Area radio, The Doghouse with JV & Elvis, Mancow, and the wild stunts that built a generation of listeners who still remember when radio was dangerous.
Hank breaks down his current gig at KCRH 89.9 FM in Hayward, where he's hosting Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, spinning Top 40, R&B, and Classic Rock while sharpening his on-air skills. He walks through the legendary Radio Survivor game from the late '90s, the prank call techniques Elvis taught him, and why shock jock humor from that era doesn't always hold up today. The conversation shifts to pop culture obsessions (Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande), church life at Castro Valley First Christian, and what Autism Awareness Month actually means to someone who grew up neurodivergent in a system that wasn't built for him.
Ryan keeps the pace moving with rapid-fire music trivia spanning the '70s and '80s, while Hank delivers his signature joke block and shouts out KCRH for helping resurrect his radio career. The episode closes with Hank's core message: never give up on your goals, no matter what obstacles stand in your way.

Yes buddy! Let me hit it! Right now you're listening to the Hammerin' Hank show with Henry Ochs and Ryan Hoppe. What's up Hammerin' Hank? How are you?
How the heck are you buddy? I'm doing amazing. How are you? Very very good. How's your week been?
I did a radio show at KCRH 89.9 FM tomorrow. I mean yesterday. And today right? No not today, yesterday. Alright so explain to us.
So you're on the radio every Wednesday. What time on KCRH? I'm on every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. If you want to check out my radio show in Hayward you can tune in to 89.9 FM or you can listen live at live.kcrhradio.com.
Awesome. Now what do you do on Thursdays when you're there but you're not on air? Do you want to do my podcast I hope? So are you there in like a class on Thursday? Yes.
Nice. How's on Tuesdays? How's class going? Pretty good. What have you been learning about?
How to become a better radio personality. And who is your boss there? Tom? Tom Loughlin. He's a good.
I'd like to give a shout out to right now. How's Tom doing buddy? Does Tom listen to our show? I email the show to him every once in a while. Hammerin' Hank what are some of the music you play on KCRH?
Top 40, MR, sometimes Classic Rock. You do a good job of talking up to post because that's an old school radio tactic. Thank you buddy. You're quite welcome. So as we always begin you are known for working with Mancow but mostly for the The Doghouse with JV & Elvis specifically Which brings a lot of memories.
What are some memories you have of working either with Mancow or JV & Elvis? Well I have a memory called the Ultimate Survivor Game. Wanted for 90 and then the year 2000. What was that like? Was that in the prime of Survivor?
It was the very very very beginning of Survivor. So you got to remember I was in kindergarten then so I didn't really watch it. At that time how big was Survivor? Survivor is extremely big. You know that prick who won the first Survivor contest?
No. What's his name again? I forgot. That even shows how irrelevant he is. So what was...
Anyway he was convicted of tax evasion. What an idiot. Hammerin' Hank, what was Radio Survivor like? Radio Survivor was we had a lot of the wanted for 90% of the people in the studio until they even get voted out, get sick or win the entire thing. And do you remember who won?
Elvis and the The Doghouse. Hell yeah. What is your favorite Elvis memory? My favorite Elvis memory is he taught me how to do comedy prank calls. Did you drink caffeine today?
Yes I did. What type of caffeine did you drink? Coffee. Me too. I had a Cuban coffee earlier.
I feel great right now. I feel very good right now because I drank coffee. In other words, Radio Station San Francisco called coffee, their old jingle was K-O-F-Y coffee 10.50. I've heard of it. I know that was the TV station that JV had that simulcast on as well.
Yep. We got what you're looking for. TV 20 stereo. Oh jeez. I love your hyperness today.
It's so cute. What I want to ask you though, what about K-O-M-E? Don't touch that radio. You have come on it. That was Dennis Direktis.
Yes sir. That's the greatest line ever. There was a radio station. The call letters were K-O-M-E. Your radio has come on it.
What was said was Dennis Direktis actually died broke. I looked him up. He had an interesting life. Terry James from Lex and Terry, a radio show that's on in many cities that I'm friends with, they worked with Dennis and they said he was a very interesting guy. Who?
That's interesting. Not that much. Haverett Hank, if I hit the music, after I point at you, are you ready for the jokes? Yes please. This is the Hammerin' Hank Show, keeping it raw.
Jokes sharper than a blade, cutting through the saw. Every segment fire, cumul like a burn. Tune in for the laughs, watch the tables turn. Hanky, what do you got for your jokes? Why did the radio host bring him a lot of the work?
Why did the radio host what? Bring a lot of the work. Why? Because he wanted to reach higher ratings. Why did the microphone go to therapy?
Why did the microphone go to therapy? Because it had too many issues. Why did the DJ sit on the clock? Why did the DJ sit on the clock? Because he wanted to be on time.
Hopefully someday a Latino woman will sit on your clock. Why did the computer start a podcast? Why did the computer start a podcast? Because it had a lot to process. Why don't skeletons host radio shows?
Why don't skeletons host radio shows? Because they don't have the guts to do it right. Why did the radio host bring a pencil to the studio? Why? In case he had to do a conclusion.
That was okay. Why did the phone call the podcast? Say it one more time. Why did the phone call the podcast? Yeah, go on.
Because they wanted to make a connection. Why did the DJ bring Brad to work? Why? Because he wanted to make some dough. Like cabbage, gorilla, etc.
Why did the microphones break up with the speaker? Why did the microphone break up with the speaker? Because it felt like it wasn't being heard. I feel that. And finally, why did the host go to the bank?
Why? To check his balance. Good job, Hanky. Thank you, buddy. 856-49-Hoppe.
That's 856-49-46-773. If you want to leave us a voice mail. We had an explosion last week of a lot of people grateful that we dedicated the show to JV. And I'm very happy about that. That guy was my dude.
Let me think here. What else do we have on this list? Oh, it's Marley's birthday. Yep. I got to give a big birthday shout out to my beloved dog, Marley, who just celebrated her 10th birthday.
Happy birthday, Marley, buddy. How much does Marley mean to you? She means a lot to me. What's the best part about her? She goes to bed with me most times at night.
Hammerin' Hank, I think she's my equivalent to my cat, Luna, which I am posting right now on our social medias and did a collab with you. Of Luna. She's my producer. She's the cutest. Cool, buddy.
Not that much. But Marley hates cats. Oh, yeah. They wouldn't get along. My cat's kind of a bitch too.
Not saying Marley's a bitch, but my cat is definitely one. 856-49-46-773. Who are some pop artists who you wish you could have seen back in the day? Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears. Did you hear about what happened with Britney?
She was arrested for DUI. Can't get anything past you. You're the paparazzi of Hayward, California. What do you think about that? That sucks.
Sometimes I masturbate to her. Okay, so hold on a second. Hold on a second. So, I'm glad you said that. So, last week at the end of the show, we included the JV podcast, C-SPOT, where you talk about masturbating to famous people.
And then the best part was last week we were talking about something and I was moving on and I misheard you say, I've masturbated to her. I've masturbated to Taylor Swift also. Yeah, that's what that's. So what is it? I was at one of her concerts.
Alright, so are you like watching the concert and then doing it? No, dreaming that I was at a Britney Spears or Taylor Swift concert. So do you have anything in front of you or are you just thinking? I was just thinking. Wow, dude, I need some like hardcoreness to get stuff off.
You know what I mean? So you're telling me you're just sitting there and you're just thinking about after the show, oh my God, Hammerin' Hank, I've heard so much about you. Thank you, buddy. Hammerin' Hank, let's do a bit real quick. Hi, this is Taylor Swift.
What's your name? And I'm Frank. Princess Uncle Jack it off back in the early eighties. Hammerin' Hank, I heard you worked with the doghouse with JV & Elvis and held your own while they were bullies. I'm proud of you.
I know. Hammerin' Hank, would you still hook up with me even though I'm engaged to Travis? Probably not. But Hammerin' Hank, we can sign an NDA and nobody will ever know that you plowed me. I know you got that.
I know you got that that BJ in a nightclub from Jose when Jose didn't give it, but he got it for you at the nightclub in the nineties. So, I mean, we know you're kind of frisky. I know. Hammerin' Hank, if I give you my hotel. OK, I think you get the point.
I watch pornography. That's how I do it. And I'm also a dog. Because I got laid this week is quite delightful. That's cool, buddy.
It was OK. It was nice. I think she's listening. Hi. OK.
Hammerin' Hank, let's be a little serious for a second and not talk about masturbation. What are some goals you have for this podcast? To create an even funnier podcast. Oh, wow. That makes me feel like I'm not funny enough.
What would you do to make it funnier? Tell more shock. Jokes. Yeah, but you're shocked. Yes, but you're not jokes.
I got it. I am kind of one, but you don't want to force it to you. You want to be a natural shock. Not just one that offends to offend. Not to offend people, but a shock.
Yes, I understand. We're speaking in circles. It's a lot different. As much as I love the doghouse with JV & Elvis, a lot of their humor does not hold up. Because they were OK.
Anyway, I know it's a touchy subject for you. However, and Hank, let's reset and let's do this real quick. You can't hear it because of the zoom call, but I have church music on after us talking about masturbation and shock jock radio. We need to cleanse ourselves. So Hammerin' Hank, tell us about church.
We had a guest speaker last night called Lido. How is that? Pretty good. He's from the Philippines. He taught us about his life in the Philippines.
What did he say about his life in the Philippines? That's a good country. It does. Also, the ministry, CV first offers worldwide. So the CV stand for Central Valley, correct?
Castro Valley. That's what I thought it was. Not at all. I said central. Hammerin' Hank, what's your favorite part about church?
The music and the sermons. How good are the sermons? Pretty good. It teach me how to become a better person. Let's say a prayer.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit, say the prayer. Thank you for letting me do this podcast. You're so passionate. Jesus, we pray. Hammerin' Hank, talk about Autism Awareness Month.
You know, April's Autism Awareness Month. How is it? I get a stupid cough at this time of year. You're okay, buddy. This isn't a perfect show.
Life's not perfect. So what does Autism Awareness Month mean for you? Autism Awareness Month is raising awareness of people of autism and their families. Oh, wow. What is it like growing up with autism?
It sucked. Believe me, I lived in a good home for 40 years and I hated it because I was locked up with a bunch of juvenile delinquents. And look at you now. You're a radio legend. You're a Hall of Famer.
I wish I was a radio Hall of Famer. You are. Hammerin' Hank, we're going to take a quick break and then we're going to play your PSAs, okay? 10-4, buddy. The Hammerin' Hank Show.
Hello again. It's your favorite San Francisco DJ, Hammerin' Hank. I may look normal, but the truth is I have a condition known as autism. That's right. It's a condition, not a disease.
Fact is, autism can strike anyone regardless of who they are. People with autism normally have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication skills, social interactions, and leisure activities. In a recent study, people with autism are less likely to have a job and more likely to become homeless. I beat the odds by having loving friends and family, having a college education. I have even worked in the San Francisco Bay Area as an honorary personality for many years.
Always remember that people with autism want the same things as you, to be happy and successful. To find out more about autism, please contact your local mental health center or visit autismspeech.org. It's Hammerin' Hank, and I appreciate your kindness. People with autism are often treated like they are different. Believe me, we are.
Hi, this is Henry Ochs, but my buddies may have known me as Hammerin' Hank. I was labeled as slow when I started school. Come to find out at the age of 12, the doctors decided I was autistic. Now at the age of 48, I have completed an associate degree in radio broadcasting and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area as an honorary personality. So yes, I am different.
People with autism have no needs, no different than you. Laugh, laugh, love, and learn to gain education and join the workforce. I did it, and so can anyone else with autism. So when you meet someone with autism, don't feel sorry for them. Work with them.
Find out for yourself that autism isn't a disease, it's a condition. To find out more about autism, please visit autismspeech.org. Autism Speaks. It's time to listen. What's up, Hammerin' Hank?
What's going on, buddy? How the hell are you? Extremely good. Leave us a voicemail, 856-494-6773. Don't hit me up on my socials at DJ Hammerin' Hank.
Hammerin' Hank, let's discuss this. What are some Disney sitcoms that should return? I think they should bring back Sydney to the Max. What's that? Sydney to the Max is a story of a junior high girl named Sydney who had a very, very interesting life.
And how much did that show mean to you? It meant a lot to me. That's awesome. Any other shows you miss? Where's the Delivery Place?
Hannah Montana with Miley Cyrus. You've probably spanked it to that, haven't you? Yeah. Any other ones? I can't think of anything right now.
Alright, let me hit the Buddy of the Week music and then when it's time to talk, I'll point at you. Right now. Alright, Hammerin' Hank, who is your Buddy of the Week? My Buddy of the Week is everyone at KCRH 89.9 FM for trying to save my radio career. Hank, Hank!
Stop! I didn't mean to yell. Stop saying try to save your career. It's been saved. You're doing good.
You're killing it. I know. I would not do this show every day, every week for free if I didn't believe in you. Buddy, you're on the Woody Show! The Woody Show doesn't even like me!
I'm too legit to quit. Too legit. You're fucking a legend, bro! You even have it in your bio. You're the best.
You're the GOAT. You overcame so much and you are one of my closest friends and I admire you. Thank you, buddy. If anything, you saved me and made me less self-centered. So thank you.
It's all good. Thank you, buddy. You are a quiet... Oh, welcome! Hammerin' Hank, who else is your Buddy of the Week?
Everyone at the C.E.V. First Christian Cash Rally, including Pastor John, Mark Berkin, Ben Atkinson, and also Sondra Blank for encouraging me to learn about Jesus. Even more. Hammerin' Hank, are you ready for Prick in the News? The Prick in the Week this week is actually Donald Trump because he led us into war.
He definitely did! He's a dickhead. Mm-hmm. He definitely is. Because he led us into war, which I hate war.
War! What is he good for? Nothing! He's good for absolutely nothing. Oh, geez.
Hammerin' Hank, is there anything else? Music trivia. Oh, fuck! I forgot about that. It's because we didn't originally have it on the list.
Thank you for reminding me. Let me hit that. All right. I know. Let me turn it up in the club.
Mm-hmm. Pop trivia questions, yeah, no lying. Got my mind sharp like a blade that's flying. They asking those questions, got my brain frying. Hammerin' Hank's got the mic up high.
Pop hits playing to the end of the sky. Gotta keep it real, can't let it slide. Answers in my head, can't let them hide. Pop trivia, yeah, we bringing the heat. Get your knowledge up, take a seat.
Playing those hits while the knowledge fleets. Hammerin' Hank never miss a beat. From MJ's moonwalk to Elton's flair. On the Hammerin' Hank show, yeah, we dare. All right, Hank, what do you have?
Who had the big hit record, Delta Dawn, way back in the early 70s? Ah, who? Helen Reddy. I never heard of her. Who had the top ten hit record, Precious and Few, in 1972?
What? Climax. Who had the big hit record, Playground, in my mind, in 1973? Who? Clint Holmes.
I did. Never heard of it. Who had the top ten hit record, We Were Running with the Night, way back in 1984? Tears for Fears. Nope.
Ronald Richie, who's the judge on American Idol? Anything else? That's it for pop music trivia. Do you have anything else in general? Well, I gotta say what's up to all my fans out there.
You okay? I'm down with this stupid cough I have. I wish it would go away. You'll be fine. Take some meds.
Or a night quote, a day quote. Well, go buy some. Have some refet drive you. And then home. Well, then take it.
All right. I gotta say what's up to all my fans out there. I love you very, very, very much. If you want to check out my radio show, I'm on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. to noon at KCRH 89.9 FM Hayward.
